A-League: Fornaroli key as Victory face Mariners

Sunday is shaping up to be an exciting day of action in the A-League, with three of the top four all on show.

Two of them, Melbourne Victory and Central Coast Mariners, face each other at AAMI Park, while the other, Macarthur FC, travel to Newcastle.

Victory finally picked up a win midweek and will be up against the second-placed Mariners, who were also in AFC Cup action.

The Mariners can be backed at 4.00 to win the minor premiership, with Victory available at 3.75.

Macarthur are sitting in fourth spot, three points being Victory and Central Coast, and can be backed at 11.00. But at least a place in finals is looking good for the Bulls.

A win at Newcastle will help cement their place in the top six.

Victory back on track

Melbourne Victory 1.90, Draw 3.60, Central Coast Mariners 3.75

Victory finally returned to winning ways in midweek, but they were far from convincing and left it very, very late.

Trailing Western United 1-0 heading into stoppage time at the end of the game, central defender Damien Da Silva came to the rescue with goals in the 95th and 98th minute.

Victory will now be hoping the win can spark them into life for the rest of the campaign.

Unlikely hero Da Silva can be backed at 10.00 to score at anytime, but Bruno Fornaroli is the real threat and can be backed at 4.75 to score the first goal of the game.

The last two fixtures between the two sides have ended with honours even, including a 1-1 draw at Central Coast Stadium back in January.

It could be another tight one and the same scoreline at AAMI Park is priced at 7.00.

The Mariners knocked Macarthur out of the AFC Cup in midweek, but the game did go to extra time and it remains to be seen if that will take its toll.

Angel Torres was on target in that win and remains a big threat. The Colombian striker can be backed at 4.00 to score at anytime.

Bulls look to bounce back

Newcastle Jets v Macarthur FC

McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

16:00 (AEST) Sunday 25th February 2024

How to watch

Newcastle Jets 1.95, Draw 4.00, Macarthur FC 3.30

Macarthur, like the Mariners, also played 120 minutes in midweek, and need to bounce back after suffering back-to-back defeats.

As well as the AFC Cup exit, they also lost 2-1 to ladder-leaders Wellington Phoenix in the game before.

But they are still having a great season and a win in Newcastle will get them back on track.

The two sides drew 1-1 at Campbelltown Sports Stadium in January, and under 2.5 goals in Sunday’s clash is available at 2.70, while both teams to score is 1.44.

Valere Germain always looms as a big threat for Macarthur and is 2.75 to score at anytime, while Jets striker Apostolos Stamatelopoulos is the A-League’s joint leading scorer with 13 strikes.

He can be backed at 4.75 to score the first goal of the game.
