A-League: Friday's match previews

There are two A-League games on Friday as Brisbane Roar make the trip to Melbourne to face the Victory, while later Western Sydney Wanderers are the visitors facing Perth Glory.

Both are finely balanced clashes on paper and we've taken a look ahead to the A-League action that kick-starts the opening weekend of the New Year.

Melbourne Victory are on the slide and have just the Perth Glory behind them in the standings. The hosts have lost their last two league games and find themselves in 11th place, just three points above last-placed Perth.

Melbourne suffered a 2-1 defeat at Central Coast Mariners in their previous outing. Cadete scored for them not long before half-time but his effort came in the middle of a brace from Jason Cummings that landed all three points for the Mariners.

Brisbane, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run in the league to seven games and are coming off a 1-1 draw against Western United last time around. Carlo Armiento scored for the second straight game and he's 18/1 to be First Goalscorer in this tussle.

Victory shade the head-to-head

The teams have locked horns 50 times in the A-League since 2006 and Melbourne currently lead the head-to-head 21-17, while 12 games have been drawn – including the last three. A stalemate here is priced at 14/5.

Brisbane have the joint-best defensive record in the league, conceding seven goals in nine games, though the Roar have failed to score in three of their last four games against Melbourne. A 0-0 draw can be backed at 11/1.

Goals certainly haven't been flowing for these sides this season, with Brisbane having scored eight times, while the hosts have nine goals in as many games.

The visitors have seen under 2.5 goals in their last four A-League outings and that outcome could be the way to look again at 1/1.

Little reason for confidence in the Glory

OddsPerth Glory 5/2, Draw 23/10, Western Sydney Wanderers 23/20

Bottom of the table Perth Glory have now failed to win any of their last three matches after suffering a 2-0 loss to Adelaide United last time out.

They've won only twice in nine games this season and their return of seven goals in that sequence is a league-low tally. They are 5/2 to get back on the winning trail when Western Sydney come to town on Friday night.

The visiting Wanderers, for their part, sit second in the table heading into the round 11 fixtures. They have won five of ten games and, conceding only seven goals, share the record for the meanest rearguard in the A-League to this points.

Stalemate could be the answer

Despite those stats, it's not a foregone conclusion that the Wanderers will leave Perth with three points. In fact, much more likely could be a stalemate at 23/10.

Western Sydney Wanderers ended their three-game winless run by condemning Macarthur to a convincing loss but they are without a win in four on the road, while Perth have managed to avoid defeat in their last four home games.

For all their good vibes and lofty ladder position, the Wanderers record of 12 goals scored in ten games is easily the poorest scoring return amongst the top four. No real surprise, then, that it is 8/11 this game will produce under 2.5 goals.
