A-League: Jets and Reds battle to avoid wooden spoon

Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United are both in need of points as they battle to avoid the wooden spoon this season.

The Jets sit in 10th spot on the A-League ladder with 20 points, while United are one point and one place below, having played a game less.

With Western United now finding some form, the Jets and United are both anxiously looking over their shoulder.

Western are still 1.61 to finish bottom, with Newcastle priced at 3.50 and Adelaide 6.50.

Both sides are struggling for form and Friday night’s clash at McDonald Jones Stadium is a tough one to call.

. What: Newcastle Jets v Adelaide United

Too many draw for Jets

The Jets have failed to pick up a win in the last seven games, but there have been four draws in that run.

That includes a 2-2 draw at Perth Glory last weekend, when they threw away a two-goal lead and had to settle for a point.

Newcastle have been competitive this season and gave both Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners a close game in recent weeks.

But the last home win came on 23rd January when they beat Brisbane Roar 3-1.

One of their issues is conceding too many goals, and they have not kept a clean sheet since December.

Both teams to score on Friday night can be backed at 1.36.

They would have been in big trouble without Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, who has bagged 14 goals so far this season.

The strike ace is 2.05 to score at anytime or 5.00 to bag the first goal of the game.

Reds have travel sickness

Adelaide United have a great record over Newcastle when winning five of the last six against them.

They beat the Jets 3-1 at Coopers Stadium back in December, but it has been a season to forget for the Reds, who have lost the last four games on the bounce.

Carl Veart’s side have not won on the road since beating Western United 3-1 way back in November.

They do have players who can hit the back of the net in the form of Nestory Irankunda and Hiroshi Ibusuki, who are 2.75 and 3.00 respectively, to score at anytime.

But conceding goals has been the big issue and they have let in 40 so far this season.

Games between these two sides are usually high scoring and over 2.5 goals on Friday night can be backed at 1.40.
