A-League: Nix look to keep the pressure on

Wellington Phoenix need all three points to put the pressure on Central Coast Mariners when they take on Newcastle Jets on Friday night.

The Phoenix and Mariners are locked on 49 points at the top of the ladder, with just two games remaining, but Central Coast have a superior goal-difference.

Central Coast are in action on Sunday when they entertain Adelaide United, so the Nix have a great chance to get the points in the bag and go three points clear.

It will be easier said than done against a Jets side that have won their last two games, and will have a big say in where the minor premiership ends up.

The Mariners must also travel to McDonald Jones Stadium in the final game of the regular season.

Phoenix finish with a home game against Macarthur, but for now all focus is on a must-win game against the Jets.

Jets in good form

Newcastle have found some form and are undefeated in the last three games, winning two and drawing one.

They were locked in a battle to avoid the wooden spoon, but have pulled away from the bottom of the ladder after winning the last two.

The Jets saw off Sydney FC 3-1 at McDonald Jones Stadium, before winning on the road against Brisbane Roar.

Now the aim will be to finish the season strongly and build some momentum for the 2024/25 A-League campaign.

Newcastle do have a decent record against the Phoenix, winning three of the last six games.

There have been plenty of goals in those games, with a minimum of three goals scored, and we could get another high-scoring encounter on Friday.

If so, then over 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 1.66 while both teams to score is available at 1.53.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos continues to fire in the goals for the Jets and has scored in each of the last two victories.

The striker can be backed at 5.50 to score the first goal of the game or 2.50 to score at anytime.

Phoenix bounce back well

Phoenix bounced back well from a defeat against Central Coast Mariners to beat Melbourne Victory 1-0, and the wins need to keep coming.

The Nix have already faced Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium this season, winning the game 2-1 back in January.

They would no doubt settle for the same outcome again, and another 2-1 victory can be backed at 9.50.

Oskar Zawada scored the winner for Phoenix in that game, and the prolific striker is 2.25 to score at anytime or 5.00 to bag the first goal of the game.

Apart from that win, the Phoenix had lost their previous two trips to Newcastle, 3-1 and 4-0, but they are a different team this season.
