A League 2023/24 Outright Preview: City remain the team to beat

The 2023/24 A-League campaign is set to get underway with Central Coast Mariners out to defend their crown after beating Melbourne City in last season's grand final.

Melbourne City will be out for revenge, and despite last season’s setback, will be the team to beat once again in the season ahead.

However, they are not the only side in the mix to win either the minor premiership or grand final in 2023/24.

Western Sydney Wanderers are expected to make further progress after making finals last season, while Sydney FC and Adelaide United should also be in the mix.

The same can be said of Melbourne Victory, who will be out to bounce back after a disappointing 2022/23 season.

City still the team to topple

Melbourne City remain the hot fancies to win the 2023/24 grand final and are priced at 3.80 to go all the way.

City cruised to the minor premiership last season and were expected to go on and complete the premiership/championship double.

However, nobody saw a 6-1 Grand Final loss against the Mariners coming. That defeat, and the manner of it, will have stung and City will be determined to set the record straight in the season ahead.

Mariners on a mission

The Mariners will also be out to prove the win was no fluke. They have seen a number of changes, with a new coach coming in and star players leaving.

Even so, they should be super competitive this season and are priced at 6.00 to win the grand final.

Western Sydney Wanderers are 7.00 and, after finishing fourth on the ladder last season, they will be out to move on to the next level.

Wanderers have made some shrewd signings during the off-season and have a highly-motivated coach in the form of Mark Rudan.

Other Grand Final contenders

Sydney FC and Adelaide United both made finals but came up short and are priced at 7.00 and 9.00 respectively to get the job done this time.

Both teams have top coaches and strong squads and are capable of going all the way if everything comes together for them.

Melbourne Victory had a shocker of a season last year and only just avoided the wooden spoon. It came as a huge shock considering they were flying high the season before.

Tony Popovic is one of the best coaches in the A-League and, after making one or two tweaks to the squad, expect them to be back in the mix.

Victory are priced at 9.00 to win the Grand Final.

Top goalscorer

Jamie Maclaren is once again the hot fancy to land the golden boot in the season ahead and can be backed at 2.50 to be Top Goalscorer.

The Socceroos ace bagged 24 goals in 29 games last season and if he can stay injury free, will be out to hit the same numbers again.

Swedish striker Marcus Antonsson will be out to make an immediate impact after joining Western Sydney Wanderers for the season ahead.

The 32-year-old, who has played for Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers, can be backed at 6.00 to finish the season as Top Goalscorer.

Polish striker Oskar Zawada bagged 15 goals in 26 matches for Wellington Phoenix last season and he can be backed at 7.00.
