A-League: Plenty at stake on Central Coast

Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne City are both in need of three points as they look to stay in touch with the teams challenging for the A-League title.

Both teams are locked on 18 points, six behind Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Victory, who sit joint-top of the ladder.

It is still very early days, but whoever loses Sunday’s game will find themselves even further off the pace. A draw will not really help either, so there is a lot at stake on the Central Coast.

Melbourne City can be backed at 6.00 to win the minor premiership, while the Mariners are available at 9.00.

A place in the top six is the minimum both sides will be hoping for, and there is still work to be done on that front as well.

Let’s take a look at the match up.

Mariners continue to climb

The Mariners remain a team very much on the up and are sitting in the top six following an unbeaten run that has stretched to eighth matches.

They have cemented their title credentials with two good results against sides competing for the minor premiership.

A 1-0 away win at Western Sydney Wanderers followed by a 1-1 draw with Melbourne Victory has the fans believing a repeat of last season’s grand final success could be on the cards.

At the very least they are mounting a solid defence of their title, and another good result against City will keep them on track.

The two sides fought out a 3-3 thriller back on 17th December and there is a good chance we will be in for another high-scoring affair on Sunday.

Over 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 1.53, while both teams to score is also available at 1.44.

Central Coast have had to deal with the departure of Marco Tulio, and now they need the rest of the team to step up.

Alou Kuol could be the man and he is priced at 2.75 to score at anytime.

City struggle for consistency

Melbourne City are still striving to find the kind of consistency that has made them the stand-out team in the A-League in recent seasons.

They have won two, drawn two and lost one of the last five games, and that run has summed up their season so far.

Last week they suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Western Sydney Wanderers, and need to bounce back against the Mariners.

At least Jamie Maclaren has started to find his form in front of goal again and now has seven goals for the season.

The strike ace can be backed at 4.50 to score the first goal of the game.

Marin Jakolis has been another key player for City this season, chipping in with five assists, while Tolgay Arslan has four.

City fought out a 1-1 draw the last time they travelled to the Central Coast and the same result this time can be backed at 7.50.
