A-League: Sunday match previews

Western Sydney Wanderers will entertain Wellington Phoenix on Sunday, while Perth Glory are at home to Newcastle Jets.

The A-League season got underway on Friday night as Adelaide United put down an early marker for the premiership with a 3-0 win over reigning premiers Central Coast Mariners.

There is also a busy schedule on Saturday, before round one is wrapped up with the double header on Sunday.

Western Sydney Wanderers have high hopes of challenging for the title this season and will be keen to get off to a winning start against a Phoenix side that is under new management.

It has been a massive week for Perth Glory, who have secured their future with new ownership, and they will be out to keep the celebrations going with a victory over the Jets.

There is the potential for two close encounters so let’s take a look at the match-ups.

Western Sydney Wanderers will begin their quest to win the A-League Championship when they take on Wellington Phoenix at CommBank Stadium.

The Wanderers made great strides last season when returning to finals, but their supporters will now be expecting them to kick on and really challenge for silverware.

They have made a number of new signings and will hope that striker Marcus Antonsson can help fire them to glory.

Antonsson can be backed at 2.05 to score at anytime against Phoenix.

In this fixture back in April, Western Sydney ran out 4-0 winners, while the clash in New Zealand finished at 1-1.

Three of the last six games have seen over 2.5 goals, with this outcome priced at 1.57 to happen again. Under 2.5 goals is available at 2.35.

Phoenix also made finals last season but now have a new coach in the form of Giancarlo Italiano after Ufuk Talay stepped away from the role.

The Nix also have a dangerous striker in the form of Oskar Zawada, and the Polish ace can be backed at 7.00 to score the first goal of the game.

Perth Glory begin a new era with new ownership and a new coach, and will be hoping to celebrate at HBF Park on Sunday.

Alen Stajcic has been coach throughout the pre-season, but now the new owners are in place, Glory can look to the future with some hope after a rough few seasons.

For now at least, these two sides are tipped to be battling it out at the wrong end of the ladder, which makes Sunday’s game even more important.

The two sides met on three occasions last season with the last two finishing 2-2, while the Jets won the other one 2-1.

Over 2.5 goals can be backed at 1.61, while under 2.5 is available at 2.25.

A third consecutive 2-2 draw can also be backed at 11.00.

There has been plenty of change at both clubs during the off-season, but as far as Glory are concerned they will be relying on Adam Taggart, who was on board last season, to get among the goals.

Taggart can be backed at 2.20 to grab a goal at anytime, while Apostolos Stamatelopoulos looks to be Newcastle’s biggest threat at 2.87 anytime.
