A-League: Adelaide desperate for victory

Adelaide United are in desperate need of three points to kick-start their season when they take on Newcastle Jets on Friday night.

The Reds were expected to be pushing for the premiership this season, but after losing four of the last five games, that goal looks a long way off.

Carl Veart’s side are currently 9.00 to win the 2023/24 A-League grand final, and it is not beyond them, if they can get their act together.

They have the squad, but now need the results, starting against the Jets at Coopers Stadium.

Newcastle are one point and one place below Adelaide on the ladder and a top-six finish would be a big success for them this season.

They can be backed at 4.33 to do just that.

Adelaide United have work to do to get their season back on track after losing the last three games on the spin.

Known for their attacking football, the goals have also dried up in the last couple of games following a 2-0 loss to Brisbane and a 1-0 defeat to Western Sydney Wanderers.

They have also lost the last two games at home. As well as the Brisbane defeat, they were hammered 5-1 by Sydney FC at Coopers Stadium.

It is worrying times for the Reds supporters and another poor result against the Jets will set alarm bells ringing.

Clough the danger

They still have a squad packed with quality, including Zach Clough, who has scored four goals and provided three assists so far.

The Englishman can be backed at 2.87 to score at anytime on Friday night.

But it is also at the back where Adelaide need to tighten up. They have conceded 14 goals this season, although that is two less than Newcastle.

Goals could be on the cards and over 2.5 is available at 1.40, while under is available at 2.87.

Jets unbeaten in last two

The Jets showed what they are capable off when stunning Wellington Phoenix 3-0 on their own patch a couple of weeks ago.

But they only just managed to snatch a late point against Perth Glory last weekend, scoring deep in stoppage time to salvage a 2-2 draw.

However that win over the Phoenix should give them confidence that another three points in Adelaide is achievable.

And in Apostolos Stamatelopoulos they have the second top goalscorer in the A-League, with seven goals.

Only Bruno Fornaroli has more with 11 strikes for Melbourne Victory, and the Jets ace can be backed at 8.00 to grab the first goal of the game.

Newcastle did stun Adelaide at Coopers Stadium this time last year when picking up a 1-0 win. The same scoreline this year is available at 19.00.

However, that has been the only win in the last six attempts against Adelaide, so they will have it all to do in this latest clash.
