A-League: Adelaide United Focus

Adelaide United are expected to have another strong season when the 2023/24 A-League campaign gets underway later on in October.

Carl Veart’s side have been one of the stand-out performers in recent seasons, but have failed to go on and win the grand final.

That is something they will be hoping to put right in the season ahead, and they can be backed at 8.00 to go on and win the 2023/24 grand final.

Let’s take a look at how Adelaide United are shaping up ahead of the new season.

Reds suffer semi-final heartbreaks

Adelaide United’s one and only grand final win came back in 2016, and although they have been a regular in finals over the last few seasons, they have yet repeat that success.

The Reds finished third on the ladder in the 2022/23 season, but suffered finals heartbreak when going out to eventual winners Central Coast Mariners in the semi-finals.

The season before they also missed out in the semi-finals, that time losing to Melbourne City after extra-time.

Adelaide will be hoping to at least go one better in the season ahead and they look to have a squad capable of pushing for honours.

Goodwin moves on

There have been plenty of comings and goings at Coopers Stadium during the off-season, but the big news is the departure of leading goalscorer Craig Goodwin.

Goodwin was a revelation last season when scoring 12 goals and providing a further 11 assists in his 25 games as the Reds finished third.

However, following a contract dispute, the Socceroos forward has opted to move on and sign a deal with Saudi Arabia outfit Al Wehda.

His boots will take some filling, but Adelaide look to have a talented squad and there is still room to bring in more signings.

Former Manchester United star Ryan Tunnicliffe has already signed. The midfielder had been playing his football in England with League One side Portsmouth before being lured over to South Australia.

Adelaide have plenty of attacking talent in their ranks, including former Bolton and Nottingham Forest forward Zac Clough.

One of the most exciting young forwards in the A-League, Nestory Irankunda, will be on board again for the season ahead, along with the likes of Ben Halloran, Hiroshi Ibusuki and Musa Toure.

Opening fixtures

Adelaide United have a tough start to the season when taking on two of the hot fancies for the Championship, but at least both are at Coopers Stadium.

Reigning premiers Central Coast Mariners are the visitors for the opening game of the season on Friday 20th October.

Veart’s men can be backed at 2.30 to start with a win, while the Mariners are priced at 2.87. The draw is available at 3.60.

The week after, Melbourne City, who are priced at 3.80 to win the Championship, will arrive at Coopers Stadium.

The Reds will then travel to take on Melbourne Victory, before another home date against Sydney FC on 11th November.

November concludes with another trip to Melbourne, this time to take on Western United.
