Soccer: Adelaide United v Central Coast Mariners preview

The 2023/24 A-League campaign will get underway on Friday night with Adelaide United entertaining Central Coast Mariners.

The Mariners are the reigning premiers after beating Melbourne City in last season’s grand final and expect to be there or thereabouts once again.

Adelaide also had a strong season before it came to an end in the semi-finals, but Carl Veart’s side are also expected to be in the mix for honours.

There has been plenty of changes at both clubs during the off-season and now it is time to find out if they will pay off.

Adelaide can be backed at 10.00 to win the grand final, with Central Coast Mariners available at 6.00.

Both sides love to play attacking football so we could be in for a cracker to kick-off the new A-League season.

Previous meetings

Central Coast Mariners have definitely had the edge over Adelaide United in recent seasons, when winning five of the six games played.

The last time they met was in the 2022/23 semi-finals, with the Mariners winning 2-1 and 2-0 to go through to the grand final 4-1 on aggregate.

They also dominated in the regular season when beating Adelaide 4-1 on their own patch, and then 4-0 back at Central Coast Stadium.

There is a very good chance we will get plenty of goals in this latest meeting and over 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 1.57.

The Mariners to win 4-1 at Coopers Stadium, just like they did in the regular season last year, can be backed at 41.00.

Irankunda to step up for Reds

Adelaide United head into the new season without last season’s top goalscorer Craig Goodwin, who has moved on to pastures new.

His boots will take some filling and it will be interesting to see who gets the goals.

They do have plenty of options and young gun Nestory Irankunda will be out to build on the immense promise he showed last season.

The striker can be backed at 2.60 to score at anytime during the game, while fellow forward Hiroshi Ibusuki can be backed at 2.75.

Adelaide have brought in former Manchester United star Ryan Tunnicliffe and the midfielder is in line to make his A-League debut.

Vukovic boost for Mariners

The Mariners have been handed a boost with the news that experienced goalkeeper Danny Vukovic has been passed fit to play.

Vukovic looked to be a doubt for the game after picking up a groin injury in training, but new boss Mark Jackson says he will be ready to play.

The goalkeeper and the Mariners can be backed at 4.50 to keep a clean sheet against the Reds.

Central Coast have lost last season’s star striker Jason Cummings, but Jackson has every faith in his young and talented squad.

Jackson believes you striker Alou Kuol can get back among the goals on his return to the club.

Kuol can be backed at 3.10 to score at anytime on Friday night.
