Australian Racing: Affaire A Suivre ready for Oaks glory

There is Group 1 action from Eagle Farm on Saturday, with the 2023 running of the Queensland Oaks the highlight of the day's action.

And there are plenty of other meetings for punters to get stuck into, including five other metropolitan fixtures, with Flemington, Rosehill and Morphettville among a busy day of racing.

Oaks success on the cards for Affaire

The big race in Queensland is set to jump as the penultimate race on a nine-race card.

A field of 23 have been declared for the 2200m contest at Eagle Farm, with Renaissance Woman and AFFAIRE A SUIVRE expected to prove popular in the market.

The former followed up a Sunshine Coast Listed success over 1800m with a good second in the Group 2 The Roses over 2000m at Doomben two weeks ago.

She steps up in distance here and 4.60 Affaire A Suivre is preferred in this contest.

The pick has made rapid progress in recent starts given that she only broke her maiden over 1500m at Cranbourne three starts back.

That triumph was followed up by a Listed success in the Port Adelaide Guineas over 1800m at Morphettville.

A return visit to Morphettville followed, with the selection battling to a narrow-margin success in the Group 1 Australiasian Oaks over 2000m at the end of April.

Freshened since that success, the daughter of Astern shapes as if she will be better over further and she is taken to salute following a third in a 1250m barrier trial at Hawkesbury May 22nd.

Prince to reign in Moreton Cup

The previous race on the Eagle Farm card is the Group 12 Moreton Cup over 1200m.

A good 4 track is expected for the sprint, with Quantico having shown good form this spell most recently when a close up second in the Listed Ortensia Stakes over 1100m at Scone last month.

Dropping in trip and grade that day, John O’Shea’s mare had been racing in Sydney prior to that including when delivering an eighth in the 1300m Group 1 Canterbury Stakes at Randwick.

PRINCE OF BOOM has shown a liking for this track in the past and is selected to deliver a victory here, however.

The 3.80 selection came home a close third over this track and trip in the Group 2 Victory Stakes on a Good 4 surface at the end of April.

A respectable sixth in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 followed and he gets an easier opportunity here. Tim Clark takes the ride and, with a good alley four off the rail, looks up to steering the gelding to victory.

Frankie fine for Flemington bid

At Flemington, FRANKIE PINOT takes the eye in the penultimate race on the card.

The race in question is the 1400m VRC Community Plate set to take place on a soft 5 surface.

Trained by Tony & Calvin Lloyd, the 10.00 selection showed good form at this trip when runner-up in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap on a soft 7 track at Sandown Lakeside three starts back.

A runner-up finish at Warrnambool followed, prior to a respectable ninth in the Group 1 Goodwood at Morphettville two weeks ago.

The six-year-old has a good record at this distance, having finished in the first three in all eight previous outings at the trip, including in the previously mentioned Sandown Lakeside race.

Claimer Madison Lloyd, on board for the pick's last five starts, is again in the saddle and looks capable of registering a victory from barrier four.
