There are four meetings set to take place on Thursday including provincial fixtures from Gosford and Northam.

Ponca to upset Amelia

The sixth race on the Gosford card is an interesting 1200m Benchmark 64 handicap for fillies and mares.

The race, set to take place over 1200m, is set to see Captain Amelia start as an odds-on favourite on her seasonal debut.

The filly debuted with a win over 1000m in a maiden at Randwick Kensington in March, prior to disappointing when eighth in a handicap over 1100m at the same venue two weeks later.

Trained by John O’Shea, the filly ended her juvenile career with a seventh in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes over 1200m at Randwick in April.

That Group 2 effort came on her first start on a wet track, a heavy 8 surface on that occasion, and the return of James McDonald on board for her first two starts is a positive.

However, PONCA showed plenty of ability in late 2022 and is taken to deliver a victory on her first start since April.

The four-year-old won twice in 2022, following up a maiden victory on a good 4 track at Gosford in November, with a win in a Class 1 handicap at Wyong the following month.

Both of those victories came over 1400m and she proved that she handles wet tracks when beaten just over one-and-a-half-lengths into fourth in the 1350m Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate at Doomben.

A solid sixth at Warwick Farm over 1400m followed, and she is taken to put a disappointing effort in a Benchmark 72 handicap over the same course and distance in April behind her to take this race.

Session to salute

The fifth race at Northam is an interesting 1600m maiden contest set to take place on a good 4 track.

While there are a number in the field expected to jump at big odds, Sensessional is expected to start as favourite having shown a good level of ability in his two starts to date.

The three-year-old gained experience in barrier trials for Todd Harvey and current stable Grant & Alanna Williams prior to making his debut at Belmont last month.

The gelding recorded a third-place finish when narrowly beaten on that occasion and duly followed up with a two length fourth over the same trip at Pinjarra at the start of this month.

While he sets the standard on form, he has barrier 11 to contend with here and may need some luck in running with the experienced LOVA SESSION preferred here.

The son of Sessions showed ability at three, including placing third in a 1200m maiden event at Pinjarra three starts back.

That effort was followed by a fourth-place finish in a 1500m maiden at the same venue when beaten by less than a length in a 16-runner field.

An inside alley in five is a positive with regards the pick’s chances and, with the step up to 1600m expected to suit, he is taken to salute under Jason Whiting.

Affinity for victory

AFFINITY FLYER takes the eye in the fourth race at Warwick.

The race concerned is a 1350m maiden handicap with a soft 5 track expected at the Queensland venue.

The pick has placed third on both starts since returning from a spell, including when beaten by just under one-and-a-half-lengths in a 1200m maiden at Casino earlier this month.

The filly raced on the speed under her jockey Jai Williams in the saddle, having previously been beaten by less than two lengths over 1050m on the synthetic track at Gold Coast Poly on 29th July.

While the selection has a wide alley to overcome here, she looks capable of overcoming that with Williams on board.
