The 2025 AFL season is set to get underway and for some teams making the top eight and playing finals will be their main target.
For some extending the season into September is the minimum requirement, while for others it would be viewed as a major achievement.
For a handful of AFL teams their top eight hopes will be in the balance for much of the season and will go right to the wire.
One thing is for certain though, the battle to make the top eight is always and exciting one.
Indeed in 2024, the top eight was not finalised until the final match of the final round of the regular season.
Let’s take a closer look at the race for the top eight.
Brisbane - 1.28
Hawthorn - 1.30
Greater Western Sydney - 1.33
Geelong - 1.40
Sydney - 1.40
Collingwood - 1.42
Fremantle @ 1.60
Fremantle just needed to beat Port Adelaide at home in the final game of the 2024 regular season to secure their place in the top eight.
However, they lost a tight encounter and will be determined to bounce back in the 2025 AFL campaign.
The Dockers are expected to go well this season and should make the top eight, however, as all Freo fans will testify, nothing is ever straightforward.
They are 1.60 to make the eight and 2.30 to miss out.
Port Adelaide @ 1.72
Port Adelaide secured second spot on the ladder with that win over Fremantle, but they will do very well to repeat that achievement in 2025.
They look like being among the teams battling for a spot in the eight, and it could go to the wire for them.
Ken Hinkley’s side are 1.72 to make it and 2.10 to miss out on finals.
Western Bulldogs @ 2.10
The Bulldogs squeezed in to finals in 2024 when finishing in sixth place on the ladder, just one win ahead of Collingwood in ninth.
It is likely to be a close call again and the Bulldogs are 2.10 to make finals and 1.72 to miss out.
Adelaide @ 2.45
It has been some time since the Crows made finals and, if offered a place in the eight at the start of the season, they would bite your hand off.
After finishing 15th on the ladder in 2024, with just eight wins, playing finals would be viewed as a big success for Adelaide.
They are 2.45 to achieve that goal and 1.55 to miss out once again.
Melbourne @ 2.75
Since winning the premiership in 2021, it has been a big fall from grace for Melbourne Demons, who did not even make the eight last season.
Returning there in the campaign ahead has to be the goal, but it will be a battle for Simon Goodwin’s side.
There will need to be a big improvement on last season and they are priced at 2.75 to make the top eight.
