AFL: Giants look to bounce back against Brisbane

Greater Western Sydney will be keen to bounce back from their first defeat of the season when they take on Brisbane in the Anzac Day clash.

The Giants had won their opening five games of the season before losing to Carlton at the weekend, and need to respond.

They are still 6.00 to go on and win the 2024 AFL grand final, while their opponents Brisbane are priced at 11.00.

It has been a disappointing start to the season for the Lions, who made the 2023 grand final before losing to Collingwood.

They sit 2-4 so far this season and need to turn things around if they are to have any chance of heading back to the MCG in September.

Four points against the Giants in the nation’s capital would be a good place to start.

. What: Greater Western Sydney v Brisbane
. Where: Manuka Oval, Canberra
. When: 19:30 (AEST), Thursday 25th April 2024
. How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel, Channel 7
. Odds: Greater Western Sydney 1.95, Brisbane 1.87

Giants sweat on star duo

The Giants face an anxious wait to see if star duo Toby Greene and Jesse Hogan will be available to face the Lions.

Both players were handed one-match bans following incidents in the defeat against Carlton at the weekend, but GWS are set to appeal.

It will be a huge blow if both players are forced to sit out, and could also mean the Giants handing debuts to a couple of players.

Key forward Max Gruzewski has been pushing to make a start after starring in the VFL this season, and could get the nod if the Hogan appeal fails.

Fellow youngster Darcy Jones is also waiting in the wings, should Greene have to serve the one-match ban.

GWS are already missing star defender Sam Taylor and gun midfielder Stephen Coniglio, so their strength in depth could be in for a big test.

Even without Hogan, the Giants do have players capable of booting the goals.

Jake Riccardi booted three in the loss to Carlton and is priced at 10.00 to score the first, or 1.08 to score at anytime.

Brisbane in need of a lift

The Lions looked to be back on track following back-to-back wins, which included an impressive 22-point win at Melbourne.

However they came crashing back down to earth with a 26-point home defeat against high-flying Geelong at the weekend.

It means they sit 2-4 for the season and there is a lot of hard work to be done to get to the top end of the ladder.

They do have a good record against the Giants however when winning the last three games, including the corresponding fixture at Manuka Oval 12 months ago.

The Lions ran out winners by 21 points on that occasion and can be backed at 6.50 to win by 13-24 this season.

Charlie Cameron kicked three goals in the recent win over Melbourne, and is priced at 11.00 to get the first here.
