AFL Grand Final preview: Collingwood and Brisbane on collision course

The two best teams in the AFL in 2023, Collingwood and Brisbane, will battle it out in the grand final on Saturday, and we could be in for a classic.

The Pies and Lions finished first and second on the AFL ladder at the end of the regular season, and have carried that form into finals.

It is very fitting that both have made it to the big dance at the MCG, and Saturday’s grand final is too close to call.

The last two grand finals have been disappointing for the neutral observer as both Geelong and Melbourne romped to hefty victories.

However it would come as a big surprise if the same was to happen here. There is not much to separate the two sides and it could go to the wire.

Pies have been top dogs

Collingwood have been the team to beat throughout the AFL in 2023 and they full deserved their minor premiership success.

The Pies did suffer a couple of late losses in the regular season, but only suffered five defeats in the entire campaign, and finished four points clear of Brisbane at the top of the AFL ladder.

They were made to work very hard in both games in finals, but as Collingwood have shown throughout the season they have what it takes to dig deep and edge the close encounters.

If it is close again in the grand final, they will back themselves to get the job done.

Collingwood can be backed at 5.50 to win by 1-12 points.

The Pies do not have a great record against the Lions and have lost the last three games against them.

And of course the Lions came out on top at the turn of the century when beating the Pies in two of their three grand final successes.

Collingwood will be missing injured forward Dan McStay, but coach Craig McRae has already confirmed that Billy Frampton will be the player to step in and replace him.

The Pies will also be missing midfielder Taylor Adams, who has failed to recover from a hamstring injury.

Brody Mihocek has been the biggest goal threat for Collingwood this season, averaging two a game and he can be backed at 9.00 to kick the first of the game.

Lions on a high

The Lions finished the regular season very strongly when winning their last five games, including a 24-point win over Collingwood in Melbourne.

It may have been at Marvel Stadium, not the MCG, but should still give them a huge amount of confidence heading into the grand final.

They can be backed at 6.50 to win by 13-24 in the grand final.

They have bags of talent in the side and after crashing out in either the semi-final or preliminary final in the last four years, they will be hoping 2023 is their year.

Lachie Neale will be on a high after winning his second Brownlow Medal and he will be key to Brisbane’s chances of getting the job done.

Neale has averaged almost 27 disposals and 14 contested possessions a game this season.

The midfielder is also priced at 7.00 to add the Norm Smith Medal for best on ground, to the Brownlow Medal.

Key forward Joe Daniher has booted 58 goals so far this season and is priced at 9.50 to boot the first goal of the grand final, while fellow forward Charlie Cameron is 10.00.

Brisbane are sweating on the fitness of Jack Payne, who has been struggling with an ankle injury, and a late call will be made on his availability.
