Sydney v Brisbane: AFL Saturday Preview

Sydney will be out for revenge when they go head-to-head with Brisbane in a repeat of the 2024 AFL grand final on Saturday.

The Swans were outclassed in the grand final at the MCG last September, losing by 60 points, and will be keen to banish the memory of that brutal defeat.

Sydney opened the season with a defeat against Hawthorn and can ill-afford to start the new season 0-2.

It means the home clash against Brisbane has even more importance attached to it.

Brisbane have had an extra week to prepare after their opening clash was postponed due to Hurricane Alfred.

The Lions will be keen to begin their premiership defence in fine style, and they do have a good record against the Swans.

Swans look to bounce back

Sydney did not start the season well when losing by 20 points against Hawthorn at the SCG at the weekend.

It is important they bounce back, and at the same time erase the memory of the 2024 grand final loss against the Lions.

They are not being helped by an injury situation that is robbing them of key players. Taylor Adams is the latest player to be ruled out after picking up a hamstring injury.

The midfielder looks set to miss out for the next four weeks.

There is good news however as Tom Papley’s ankle injury is nothing serious, and the small forward should get the nod to play.

Papley can be backed at 13.00 to boot the first goal of the game, or 1.16 to score at anytime.

Joel Amartey, who kicked three in the loss to the Hawks, can be backed at 11.00 to kick the first.

Lions set to launch defence

The Lions will fancy their chances of winning back-to-back premierships, and will be keen to get off to a winning start.

There is no Joe Daniher following his retirement, but Brisbane still have enough top players to have another strong season.

Eric Hipwood now has the chance to fill the boots of Daniher and will be out to hit the ground running at the SCG.

The forward is 11.00 to kick the first goal of the game, or 1.10 to score at anytime.

Brisbane have won the last three meetings, but this one is expected to be closer than the grand final.

The Lions can be backed at 6.00 to win by 1-12 points.
