AFL Team Profile: Greater Western Sydney

Greater Western Sydney made it all the way to a preliminary final in 2023 and hopes are high heading into the new AFL campaign.

The Giants only joined the AFL in 2012 and have yet to win a premiership, but did make the grand final in 2019 before losing to Richmond Tigers.

They also made the preliminary final last season and should be in the mix once again in 2024.

Lead by head-coach Adam Kingsley, GWS are among the fancied teams to go all the way and win the grand final and are priced at 9.00.

There are some stand-out players on the Giants list and if it all comes together, they could be in for a great season.

Let’s take a closer look at the Giants ahead of 2024.

Giants fall just short

Greater Western Sydney had a season to remember, but it ended in disappointment following a preliminary final loss against eventual winners Collingwood.

GWS will have been left wondering what might have been after losing the prelim by just one point.

To fall at the final hurdle before the grand final, will have been hard to take, but should provide extra motivation ahead of 2024.

The Giants finished the season strongly to make the top eight, finishing in seventh spot with 13 wins from their 23 fixtures.

They had the momentum heading into finals and were looking strong with wins over St Kilda and Port Adelaide to set-up the Collingwood showdown.

The clash with the Pies proved to be one game too many for them, but they should come roaring back this season.

A place in the top four would boost their chances of going all the way, and they are priced at 2.25 to make it.

Key players

The Giants have a quality list, and if their star men step up to the plate, they could go a long way in 2024.

Toby Greene is a huge part of the GWS side and how the Giants go this season will depend on him staying fit and out on the park.

The forward kicks goals for fun, but it is also his leadership qualities that will be crucial for the Giants.

The same can be said for the likes of Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly and Lachie Whitfield, who are all big players for the Giants.

Coniglio was back to his best last season and Kelly is now one of the very best midfielders in the AFL.

Whitfield is also key to the Giants defence and not many will get around him in 2024.

Aaron Cadman and Finn Callaghan could also be players to look out for in 2024.

Giants out for revenge

GWS will begin the season with a re-match against Collingwood, and will be keen to erase the memory of the preliminary final defeat.

The Giants will have home advantage and are priced at 1.78 to begin with a win, while the Pies are available at 2.05.

The week after they entertain North Melbourne and are the hot fancies at 1.08 to win. The Kangaroos are 8.00 to pull off a big surprise.
