Australian Racing: Alchian all set for Stawell success

There are six meetings set to take place on Sunday including at Stawell where an eight-race program is scheduled, as well as at Mornington and Mudgee.

Race 6 Stawell

Alchian @ 5.50

Race 7 Albany

Currimundi @ 5.00

Race 6 Mornington

Indreamsyou'remine @ 5.00

Alchian look like the one to beat

The sixth race at Stawell is an interesting Benchmark 64 handicap set to take place over 1600m.

Jordan Childs’ mount Sevillana is expected to jump as favourite when dropping down from metro level racing.

The five-year-old came within a length of saluting when runner-up in a 1528m Benchmark 64 handicap at Moonee Valley three starts back.

A good third over 1600m when racing at the same Benchmark 64 level at Ballarat followed, prior to a close fifth in the City Mile Final over 1600m at Caulfield.

The mare jumped at odds of $17 in that Caulfield contest and, while expected to go well in what looks like an easier contest, preference is for ALCHIAN, who is resuming here.

Trained by Ben, JD & Will Hayes, the gelding has placed in four of his last five starts dating back to a second at Moonee Valley in February last year.

That Moonee Valley effort came in a Benchmark 64 handicap over the Cox Plate track and trip of 2040m.

The four-year-old delivered two placed efforts at Geelong in his last prep, including when third in a Benchmark 64 handicap over 1760m in early October.

The 5.50 pick raced on a soft 5 track that day, but the quicker going expected here is no issue and he returns from a spell.

The top weight has the services of Blaike McDougall here and he looks capable of scoring from barrier seven.

Currimundi ready for Cup glory

It’s Cup Day at Albany, with the big race set to take place over 2100m as the penultimate race on an eight-race card.

The 2100m handicap has attracted a field of 13, with Beats Of War expected to have his supporters following a track and trip win earlier this month.

The four-year-old had completed a hat-trick when winning by a narrow margin in a Benchmark 66+ handicap at Ascot three starts back.

While two below-par efforts followed, the gelding returned to winning ways when successful by half-a-length on a good 4 track here on 16th March.

Top weight CURRIMUNDI is selected here, however, having delivered a respectable effort despite finishing only ninth in the 2000m Bunbury Cup over 2000m earlier this month.

The 5.00 selection placed twice at Ascot earlier this year, including when losing out by less than half-a-length as runner-up in a Benchmark 84+ handicap there last month.

The five-year-old failed to shine when only seventh in an 1800m Ascot event subsequently, prior to the previously mentioned Bunbury Cup effort.

Trainer Steve Wolfe’s representative has a wide barrier to overcome, but looks up to doing just that with Shaun McGruddy booked to ride.

Dreams to salute at Mornington

Trainer Greg Hayes saddles INDREAMSYOU’REMINE in the penultimate race on Mornington’s seven-race card.

The six-year-old has shown good form so far this prep, including when winning a Restricted 58 handicap over 1950m at Yarra Glen three starts back.

The 5.00 pick has acquitted himself well since, most recently when runner-up in a 2100m Restricted 58 handicap at Stony Creek on 10th March.

The gelding raced on a firm 2 track when beaten two-and-a-half-lengths that day and he has a good barrier in five here.

Jockey Teodore Nugent, on board for the previously mentioned Yarra Glen success, rides for the first time since then and the pair look capable of recording their second win together.
