Big Bash preview: All eyes on Sydney Showground showdown

The points and bragging rights are at stake at the Showground Stadium on Saturday, as the Sydney Thunder prepare to take on the Sydney Sixers.

In this early stage of the season, it’s the Sixers who have enjoyed the stronger start, with three wins from their opening four games.

The Thunders have enjoyed some impressive individual performances but as a collective, they have only managed one win from their first four outings of the Big Bash League campaign.

All eyes will be on the Sydney Showground Stadium this weekend to see which side of the city will be smiling come Sunday morning.

Thunder have ground to make up

As mentioned previously, there are some players in the Thunder squad that have hit the ground running in the new season.

As of writing, no player has taken more wickets than Daniel Sams, who has already dismissed 10 batters this season.

Ably supported by Zaman Khan with eight wickets to his name, the pair have been leading the way in the Thunder bowling attack.

Meanwhile, in the batting department, Cameron Bancroft has smashed 175 runs already and only Perth Scorchers’ Aaron Hardie has more runs (182) at this stage.

However, these figures have most importantly only translated into one win in four games for the Thunder, who currently occupy fifth place in the standings.

Going into this game on the back of a 15-run defeat to Brisbane Heat, Thunder can take confidence from that performance against the table toppers.

The Thunder are 2.20 to chalk up their second win of the season on Saturday but it won’t be easy against a Sixers outfit who will be looking for a response after their first defeat of the campaign last time out.

Sixers seek response

Suffering a first defeat last time out against the Melbourne Stars, head coach Greg Shipperd will be looking for a response from his Sixers side this weekend.

Losing by four wickets with just three balls of the match remaining, the Sixers were close to maintaining their perfect start to the season.

All eyes will now be on how Shipperd’s side respond in a derby match against the Thunder.

The Sixers are the slight favourites at 1.66 to get back to winning ways at the first time of asking, before back-to-back matches against the Brisbane Heat.

James Vince is the shortest price in the Team - Top Batter market for the Sixers at 4.00 to score the most runs for his side.

Meanwhile, Bancroft, who has enjoyed an outstanding start to the season, is currently available at 3.60 in the same market to be the leading runscorer for the Thunder.
