A-League 2023/24: Start date, how to watch, schedule & more

The 2023/24 A-League campaign will be the 19th edition of the competition since it first take place in the 2005/06 season.

Central Coast Mariners are the reigning champions after they pulled off a huge upset in the 2022/23 grand final, thrashing Melbourne City 6-1.

Heading into the 2023/24 season, City will again be the team to beat but, as the Mariners proved, anything is possible and the competition is sure to be tight once again.

When is the 2023/24 A-League?

The 2023/24 A-League season will begin in October and run through until May 2024.

Twelve teams will participate in the A-League campaign and there will be 26 rounds of the regular season before the finals takes place.

The top six teams at the end of the regular season will contest finals.

In the first week of finals, the team that finished third will play sixth and fourth will play fifth in one-off elimination finals.

The winners go through to meet the top two in the semi-finals, which will be played over two legs.

The grand final will be played in Sydney for the next three seasons, regardless of which teams make it through.

Where can I watch the 2023/24 A-League?

Paramount+ will be live streaming every game in the competition, while Network 10 currently hold the broadcast rights to the A-League.

Which teams take part in the 2023/24 A-League?

Once again there are 12 teams that will take part in the A-League season.

They are Adelaide United, Brisbane Roar, Central Coast Mariners, Macarthur, Melbourne City, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets, Perth Glory, Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers, Wellington Phoenix, Western United.

Who are the contenders?

Melbourne City

Despite losing the grand final to Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne City will once again be the team to beat in the 2023/24 A-League campaign.

City cruised to the minor premiership when sweeping everyone aside and made light work of Sydney FC in the semi-final before the shock defeat to the Mariners in the big dance.

Once again City will have a squad packed full of quality and they will be out make amends for the grand final defeat.

Central Coast Mariners

The Mariners will be in the mix again despite the loss of star striker Jason Cummings.

Cummings scored two goals in the grand final, to take his tally to 20 goals in 28 games since arriving at the club from Scotland.

The Socceroos ace will be playing his football in India next season, but the Mariners have already proven they can cope with the loss of big players and still go on and win a grand final.

Adelaide United

The Reds had an outstanding season but it can be argued that they peaked too early following a disappointing finals campaign.

Carl Veart’s side faltered towards the end of the campaign and lost second spot on the ladder to the Central Coast Mariners on the last day of the regular season.

The Mariners then saw them off in the semi-finals. However, the Reds still have a quality squad and with a couple more additions, will be grand final contenders.

Best of the rest

Last term Western Sydney Wanderers had a strong season under new coach Mark Rudan, making finals before falling at the first hurdle.

The Wanderers will be out to make further progress in 2023/24. So too will Sydney FC, who made it to the semi-final before losing to Melbourne City over the two legs.

Melbourne Victory had a 2022/23 to forget, but will be expected to bounce back strong in the 2023/24 season.

Who has won the A-League title the most times?

Sydney FC won the first-ever A-League title, edging Central Coast Mariners 1-0 thanks to a Steve Corica strike.

The Sky Blues have added a further four crowns to their roll of honour to become the most successful team of the A-League era, with Melbourne Victory on four and Brisbane Roar three.

Melbourne City have made four consecutive grand finals since 2020, with their lone success coming in 2021 when they defeated Sydney 3-1.
