Australian Racing: Alligator smells Blood at Flemington

There's plenty of racing action for punters to get involved in on Saturday, with the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington the highlight of a busy schedule.

Race 7 Flemington

Alligator Blood @ 3.80

Race 8 Randwick

Overpass @ 5.50

Race 7 Randwick

Fangirl @ 2.70

Blood bidding for Diva glory

The previously mentioned Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes is set to take place over 1600m at Flemington with the weight for age event attracting a field of seven.

Mr Brightside is expected to jump as a short-priced favourite having won both of his starts this time around.

The second of those outings saw the six-year-old triumph by nearly half-a-length in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield at the start of this month.

That success marked the gelding’s fourth consecutive win, a run that also included a narrow victory in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile handicap over this trip at Randwick in April.

The gelding had a couple of his rivals here behind him in the Memsie, with the second home Princess Grace and fourth home ALLIGATOR BLOOD both set to re-oppose here.

Preference of the pair is for Alligator Blood who has shown a liking for this venue in the past winning three of his four starts here.

Those victories include a win over course and distance on a good 3 track in the Group 1 Champions Mile in November last year.

The 3.80 pick was returning from a spell when contesting the Memsie with the gelding’s sole defeat here coming when losing out narrowly in finishing second in this race in 2022.

Alligator Blood has won over half of his starts on tracks rated good and he is taken to upset the favourite to deliver his fourth victory in seven second up starts.

Overpass set for Shorts success

The Group 2 Toyota Forklifts Shorts is one of two $1,000,000 races on the Randwick card, with the 1100m contest set to take place a good 4 track.

The four-year-old filly In Secret showed good form last year, including when taking out the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap over 1200m at Flemington in March.

While the James Cummings-trained filly failed to shine in the Group 1 T J Smith at this track subsequently, she returned to form with a second over 1000m when returning this campaign.

That return came in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes held on a soft 5 track and the extra 100m she encounters here is in her favour.

While the filly looks a worthy favourite in this field and hails from an in-form stable, it may pay to look to the Bjorn Baker stable for the winner.

The five-year-old OVERPASS is their representative here, with the gelding showing good form earlier this year in taking out the $4,000,000 The Tabtouch Quokka over 1200m at Ascot.

That victory was followed by a half-length defeat when competing at Group 1 level in the Doomben 10,000 over the same trip in May.

The 5.50 gelding has been spelled since that effort, but notably has gone well first up in the past including when runner-up in this race 12 months ago.

The selection was beaten by Nature Strip on that occasion and coming into this event on the back of a couple of barrier trials at Rosehill he looks capable of saluting here.

Fangirl to follow up

The 7 Stakes over 1600m is the second of the two $1,000,000 races on the Randwick card, with the likes of Zaaki and promising four-year-old Pericles among those set to line-up.

The pick here, however, is FANGIRL who showed a liking for this venue last season including when placing second in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes over this distance.

The 2.70 mare resumed this campaign with a narrow margin victory when racing over 1400m in the Group 1 Winx Stakes here last month.

Chris Waller’s mare finished strongly having been ridden from off the pace, while the return to 1600m here is no issue.

Kerrin McEvoy, on board when the mare finished runner-up in three consecutive starts earlier this year, returns to the saddle here and his mount is taken to complete a double.
