Australian Racing: Anilla ready to deliver at Wagga

There's plenty of racing action to get involved with on Sunday, including at Wagga, where an eight-race card is scheduled.

Wagga is one of six meetings being staged on Sunday, with Bendigo, Hobart, Muswellbrook, Pinjarra and Port Agusta the other venues.

Race 7 Wagga

Anilla @ 5.00

Race 6 Pinjarra

Wuhan Warrior @ 8.00

Race 5 Sunshine Coast

Fighting Idol @ 11.00

Anilla looks good for Prelude win

The penultimate race at Wagga is the 1200m Wagga Town Plate Prelude, an open handicap set to take place on a good 4 surface.

Kym Davison saddles Canny Hell here, with the gelding having registered three wins so far in 2024.

All three of those wins have come at Albury, while he has also delivered a seventh in the Listed Canberra Guineas over 1400m.

The three-year-old returned to winning ways when saluting in a Benchmark 74 handicap on his return to Albury last month and he has trialled well there since.

The son of Hellbent drops back in distance here, however, and while he has performed well over shorter in the past, those efforts have come in easier contests than he tackles here.

ANILLA showed that he can compete at metro level in his last prep, winning twice including in a Benchmark 70 handicap over 1300m on the Hillside track at Sandown in September.

The selection has shown good form at Flemington since and has also crossed the border to salute in an 1100m Benchmark 86 handicap at Morphettville.

While the six-year-old has failed to salute in two starts this prep, he has delivered a couple of solid efforts including when fifth of six over this trip at Moonee Valley first up.

The 5.00 pick took a marked step forward from that effort when beaten less than two lengths into fourth in a 1400m handicap at Oakbank at the end of last month.

Both of those efforts came on a good 4 track and, while he has been allocated a wide barrier here, that shouldn’t pose any issues given his hold-up style of racing.

Warrior to battle to PInjarra victory

The sixth race at Pinjarra is a heat of the Provincial Championship, with a field of nine set to take to the track for the 1200m Class 5 handicap event.

Meryl Hayley’s Simple Logic will jump from next to the rail and he is expected to have his supporters, having won twice from six starts this prep.

Those two wins include a one-and-a-half-length victory in a Class 3 handicap over 1200m at Ascot in February.

The five-year-old has won on the Scarpside track over this trip subsequently and arrives here on the back of a close sixth over 1200m at Ascot on 13th April.

The selection here is WUHAN WARRIOR, who was beaten less than a length over 1000m in a Class 3 handicap on the Scarpside track here at the end of December.

The five-year-old, who showed good form at Broome last year, has made just two starts since then with the most recent coming when winning at Narrogin recently.

The 8.00 gelding recorded a victory by a narrow margin when contesting an 1190m Class 5 handicap on a good 4 track on that occasion.

Trained by Hayden Ballantyne, the son of Snippetson gets in off a nice racing weight here, while Victoria Corver takes one-and-a-half-kilograms off the selection’s back.

Idol to shine at Sunshine Coast

At Sunshine Coast Neil Hocking's FIGHTING IDOL takes the eye in the fourth race of the day, a 1000m Benchmark 70 handicap.

The four-year-old showed good form at this track earlier this season when winning twice, including in a Benchmark 65 handicap over 1300m in October.

The 11.00 gelding won by half-a-length on a good 4 track having raced close to the speed on that occasion.

The son of Fighting Sun has been off the track since registering a fifth when beaten just over one-and-a-half-lengths in a Class 3 handicap over 1200m here on 18th November.

Justin P Stanley’s mount won first up in maiden company last prep and he looks capable of resuming with a victory.
