A-League: Another stalemate on the cards for Victory

Having drawn all of the last three A-League outings, Melbourne Victory will be determined to get back to winning ways on Sunday when they face the Central Coast Mariners.

The clash in Gosford forms the first part of a Sunday double header, with Newcastle Jets playing hosts to Melbourne City later in the day.

First we focus on the action at Industree Group Stadium, with Melbourne determined to end a frustrating spell with three points at the Mariners.

One of four unbeaten teams going into this weekend’s fixtures, it has certainly been a solid start to the campaign for Tony Popovic’s Melbourne Victory.

Winning their first two games of the season against Sydney FC and the Newcastle Jets, Melbourne have since gone on to draw their following three games 1-1 against Adelaide United, Wellington Phoenix and Macarthur.

A 1-1 scoreline has been a theme in Victory’s recent encounters with the Mariners, with three of the last six meetings finishing with a goal apiece.

The same scoreline to happen on Sunday in Gosford is available at 7.50

Central Coast have had a torrid start to the season, losing all of their first four games, before finally getting their first points last time out with a 3-1 win over Newcastle.

With perhaps confidence lifted after that win over the Jets, the Mariners might be able to grind out a draw against draw specialists Melbourne Victory.

The fact both teams are 2.60 for the win here further indicates how tight Sunday’s contest is expected to be.

City desperate to stop the rot

OddsNewcastle Jets 3.75, Draw 3.80, Melbourne City 1.90

With just one win to their names in their first five outings of the A-League campaign, it’s been far from the start Melbourne City would have wished for.

City’s fortunes in the AFC Champions League have not been going according to plan of late either, with a home defeat to Buriram United followed by a 3-3 draw at Ventforet Kofu.

Back to the bread and butter of the A-League, City boss Aurelio Vidmar will be determined for his side to finally kick-start their domestic campaign with three points at Newcastle. Something City are 1.90 favourites to achieve.

Like City, Newcastle have also just one win to their names after their first five outings and a 3-1 loss to the Mariners last time out shows where this Jets side are at present.

City have lost just one of their last six encounters with the Jets and should have too much quality for Newcastle on Sunday.
