Australian Racing: Apollo expected to fire at Dubbo

There are three meetings set to take place on Monday, with wet tracks expected at both Dubbo and Muswellbrook and a good 4 surface at Warwick.

Race 4 Muswellbrook

My Riviera @ 4.20

Race 6 Dubbo

Apollo Star @ 4.80

Race 5 Warwick

Tattle @ 4.60

Riviera to stay unbeaten

The fourth race at Muswellbrook is a 1450m Class 1 handicap, with Zippo Idea expected to start a short-priced favourite.

The filly has made just the three previous starts with two of those coming at this venue including when debuting with a third over 1000m on a soft 5 track here in July last year.

The three-year-old was spelled following that effort and filled the same position when contesting an 1100m maiden held on a good 4 surface at Scone when racing first up last month.

Rodney Northam’s representative broke through for her first win when racing over 1280m back on a wet track in a maiden here earlier this month and remains open to improvement.

However, the Paul Messara & Leah Gavranich-trained MY RIVIERA is preferred in this contest, with the training team boasting a 50% strike-rate (6/12) with their representatives here in the last 12 months.

The four-year-old showed improvement when beaten less than three lengths in her second barrier trial over 1000m at Tamworth last month and debuted at the same venue on Christmas Eve.

The 4.20 selection came home in front in a 12 runner 1200m maiden event on that occasion, with the fourth home Turbo Charged winning subsequently.

The daughter of Real Impact has a wide barrier to overcome, but with the extra distance expected to suit she is taken to maintain her unbeaten record with Ashley Morgan taking the ride.

Star to shine at Dubbo

The first heat of the Barastoc Summer Sprint Series is a Benchmark 58 1000m handicap set to take place as the penultimate race on Dubbo’s seven-race card.

Trainer Clint Lundholm saddles four runners in the field, including expected favourite Devine Chops, the last experienced runner in the field.

The gelding showed ability when third on debut at Coonamble and broke his maiden at the second attempt when winning by three lengths in a 1010m maiden at Orange on December 28th.

Ronald Simpson takes the ride on the gelding who won on a soft 5 track that day and is expected to want to make all from barrier two.

Braith Nock’s mount APOLLO STAR is selected to get the better of the three-year-old however having registered a track and trip win in a Class 1 handicap when racing first up in November.

Successful on a good 4 track that day, the gelding has gone on to place in both subsequent starts including when one-and-a-half-lengths third in a Benchmark 50 handicap on December 23rd.

The 4.80 pick raced over this course and distance when beaten one-and-a-half-lengths having been forced to race wide and without cover that day.

Brett Thompson’s representative has plenty of experience and looks capable of recording his second win at this venue.

Tattle taken for Warwick glory

The fifth race at Warwick is a competitive 1200m Benchmark 60 handicap with Georgina Cartwright’s mount TATTLE selected to record a victory.

The 4.60 four-year-old returned from a spell with a narrow victory in a maiden held over 1200m on a good 4 surface at Toowoomba on December 16th.

A change of tactics saw the four-year-old race from the front when contesting a Class 2 handicap held over 1300m at Toowoomba subsequently.

The pick faded into third, beaten four-and-a-half-lengths in that latest effort, but has an inside barrier here and returning to country level racing looks up to doubling her career tally.
