Australian Racing: Arabian Riches going for Geraldton gold

There are four meetings set to take place on Thursday including provincial fixtures from Gosford and Geraldton.

Azayaka to break maiden

The most valuable race on the Gosford card is the fourth run of the day, a 1000m maiden contest due to take place on a good 4 track.

Top weight AZAYAKA showed good form in two starts last spell and is expected to start a short-priced favourite.

The filly debuted with a length second in a track and trip maiden on a soft 5 surface while she followed that up with a four-length third on a good 4 track over the same distance at Scone.

Spelled following that Scone effort in May, the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained filly delivered an impressive three-length victory in a Rosehill barrier trial over 900m last month.

The daughter of More Than Ready looks to have the measure of those with experience and she is taken to salute here with newcomers Marchesi and Cosmos looking the biggest threats.

Golden to stay unbeaten

The fifth race at Geelong is an interesting Benchmark 64 handicap contest set to take place over 1543m.

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Colombe D’Or is sure to have her supporters having delivered a first up victory over 1433m in a Benchmark 64 handicap at Werribee three starts back.

That Werribee effort came on a heavy 8 track and, while she has finished down the field twice since, the first of those saw her weaken late in a 1500m Benchmark 64 handicap at Sandown Lakeside.

The five-year-old raced from the front at Sandown Lakeside and having failed to shine when odds-on at Sale subsequently she looks opposable in this field.

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott team have to be respected and their GOLDEN PIERRO is preferred in this contest.

The four-year-old showed ability when a length third in a 1080m barrier trial at Randwick in October last year.

The pick has evidently had his issues since having had just the one further barrier trial prior to debuting with a victory over 1200m at Swan Hill last month.

Always prominent in a nine-runner maiden held on a good 3 track that day, the gelding asserted by nearly a length under her jockey here Winona Costin.

The selection steps up in distance here and he looks capable of overcoming a wide alley in this contest.

Riches to resume with victory

Westozi will jump from next to the rail and is expected to prove popular ahead of the sixth at Geraldton.

The race in question is an 1113m Benchmark 70+ handicap set to take place on a good 4 surface at the Western Australia venue.

The four-year-old is a regular at this circuit having won four times here in January and February of this year.

The gelding, a winner from 1200m to 2100m in that time period, has been spelled since finishing runner-up over 1900m in a Benchmark 58+ handicap here in April.

However, the son of Awesome Rock has yet to win first up and as such looks opposable, with preference for ARABIAN RICHES.

The veteran performer won twice here earlier this year, including when taking out a Benchmark 70+ handicap over 1200m on a good 4 track by nearly two lengths in April.

The selection faded having raced from the front when fourth over 1400m in a similar contest here subsequently however.

The son of Ouqba has shown good speed in sprint contests in the past and should have no issues dropping back in distance, so he’s selected to salute from barrier seven.
