Australian Racing: Artieos to brush off Goulbourn rivals

Goulburn's eight-race meeting is Tuesday's most valuable card, while they are also set to race at both Wangaratta and Kempsey.

Race 5 Goulburn

Artieos @ 6.50

Race 6 Wangaratta

Capulet @ 5.00

Race 6 Kempsey

Foolish @ 4.40

Artieos goes for Goulburn glory

The fifth race at Goulburn is a 1000m Benchmark 58 handicap expected to take place on a good 4 surface.

Matthew Kelley is set to saddle Puerto Rico here, with the gelding having registered a number of good, placed efforts without winning last season.

The six-year-old resumed this prep with a down the field effort over 950m at Moree at the start of last month and is expected to have his supporters following an improved effort last time.

That latest effort saw the gelding beaten less than half-a-length in finishing third in a six-runner 1100m Benchmark 58 handicap at Nowra.

Coriah Keatings, on board that day, is again set to ride and, while her mount boasts an inside alley, he is expected to find a few too good here.

Selection ARTIEOS won two of her last final three starts last prep, including by half-a-length in a 1000m handicap held on a good 4 surface at Crookwell in March.

The five-year-old went on to end that prep with a close second when contesting a 1010m Benchmark 50 handicap at Moruya at the end of that month.

The daughter of Flying Artie was spelled following that effort, a race in which she tried to make all, and she returned with a frontrunning success at Queanbeyan just under a month ago.

The 6.50 pick got home by a narrow margin when racing over 900m in a Class 1 handicap that day and she is taken to defy a wide barrier to complete a double.

Capulet to salute at Wangaratta

Wangaratta are set to play host to eight races with the sixth race on the card a 1400m Benchmark 58 handicap.

Copperfield delivered a victory over 1300m when contesting a Restricted 58 handicap here earlier this year and is expected to feature prominently in the betting.

The seven-year-old race on a soft 5 surface on that occasion and has gone on to deliver three good efforts on good going.

The second of those efforts saw him take out a Benchmark 58 handicap over 1300m at Wodonga last month.

The gelding has since placed second in a similar race at Gunbower, with apprentice Brittany Button, on board there, again set to ride.

CAPULET is the selection here for the Tony & Calvin McEvoy team, having made a pleasing return to action at Warrnambool last month.

The four-year-old was beaten less than two lengths when fourth in a 1400m Benchmark 58 handicap that day and she tackles a similar contest here.

The quicker going expected for this event is no issue, with the daughter of Extreme Choice having demonstrated good form on sound surfaces as a three-year-old.

The 5.00 pick’s efforts at three including a good third when contesting a metro event over 1600m at Sandown in March.

Promising apprentice Sarah Field takes a valuable three kilograms off the selection’s back, with the pair taken to deliver a win in what looks a competitive affair.

Foolish to score at Kempsey

A heavy 10 track is expected at Kempsey, with the penultimate race of the day a 1450m Class 3 handicap.

Kim Waugh saddles FOOLISH here, with the gelding having registered his most recent victory when saluting in a 1350m Benchmark 64 handicap at Wyong three starts back.

The six-year-old raced on a soft 6 track that day and has since performed with credit on a sound surface, including when fourth on a good 4 at Tamworth.

The 4.40 selection gets a drop in distance here, having been beaten just under two lengths when racing over 1600m in a Benchmark 66 handicap at Tamworth.

Notably with underfoot conditions in mind, the pick has demonstrated good form on heavy surfaces in the past, finishing in the first three in four of his six starts on heavy ground.

Benjamin Osmond takes the ride for the first time here and he looks up to steering his mount to victory.
