Asian Cup: Socceroos must find cutting edge

Australia will be out to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup when they take on Indonesia on Sunday evening.

The Socceroos were far from convincing in the group stage, picking up two wins and a draw, but have made it through to the Round of 16 nonetheless.

They can be backed at 7.00 to go all the way and win the tournament, but first off all they have to negotiate their way past Indonesia.

It would be a huge upset if the Socceroos did not make it through to the quarter-finals, but the opposition have nothing to lose and there can be no room for complacency.

Socceroos struggling to create

The Socceroos made it through to the Round of 16 after topping Group B with seven points from a possible nine.

However they will need to raise their game significantly if they are to go on and win the Asian Cup.

Creating chances and scoring goals has been an issue so far. They have scored just four in three games.

Following the 2-0 win over India, they beat Syria 1-0 and then drew 1-1 with Uzbekistan. In the last two games they had just two shots on target and both went in.

Indonesia have conceded seven goals in their three games so far, so the opportunities should come for the Socceroos.

But they have been struggling to break down sides that have been sitting deep and defending, and will be tested once again.

Over 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 1.57, under is 2.35.

The last time the two sides met was way back in 2010 in Brisbane, with the Socceroos winning 1-0.

Another 1-0 win for Graham Arnold’s men can be backed at 7.50.

Jackson Irvine remains Australia’s leading goalscorer for now with two goals and is priced at 3.25 to score at anytime.

Mitchell Duke, who has yet to score this tournament, is 2.00.

Indonesia show their metal

Indonesia managed to make it through to the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed finishers in the group stages.

They showed they are no mugs when coming through a very tough group that also included Iraq, Japan and Vietnam.

Despite losing two of their three games, they still managed to score in every game, and will take confidence from that.

Indonesia managed to breach the Japan defence in the last game, with Sandy Walsh finding the back of the net.

Walsh can be backed at 19.00 to do the same at anytime against the Socceroos.
