Cricket: Aussies target series whitewash

Australia will look to complete a series whitewash when they take on Pakistan in the third and final Test at the SCG.

The Aussies have dominated the first two Tests in Perth and Melbourne, winning by 360 and 79 runs respectively, and are the hot fancies to make it 3-0.

Pakistan put up more than a fight in the second Test and had a couple of key moments in the game gone their way, there could have been a different outcome.

The tourists will be keen to build on the positives taken from the second Test and end the series on a high.

A two-Test series against West Indies follows immediately for Australia, but for now all eyes are on 3-0 series win.

Let’s take a look ahead to the Test that gets underway on Wednesday.

Australia say farewell to Warner

Australia have stuck with the same squad that won the first two Tests, and that means David Warner will get the chance to bow out of the Test arena in style.

Warner always intended to retire from Test-match cricket in his home state of New South Wales, and that will come true after Australia confirmed their squad.

Talk has already turned to who will replace him in the Test side, with Marcus Harris, Matt Renshaw, Cameron Bancroft and Cameron Green all in contention.

All will become a lot clearer when the squad for the series with West Indies is announced, but for now the focus is on Warner.

The opener starred in the first Test when smashing 164 runs in the first innings, but he disappointed in the second Test.

Warner will be hoping for more than the 38 and six runs he managed at the MCG, and he is priced at 1.83 to score over 84.5 runs in the match.

Boland on standby

Pat Cummins was the star of the show with the ball in the Boxing Test, becoming just the second Australian Test captain to take a 10-wicket haul.

The skipper is at the top of his game after posting figures of 10-97 and he will be in the running to be Player of the Match in Sydney.

Australia are likely to name an unchanged side, and that means that local legend Scott Boland, who loves taking wickets at the SCG will have to remain on standby.

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Marsh, Steve Smith, Mitch Starc, David Warner.

Pakistan look to bounce back

Some basic errors cost Pakistan in the second Test, in particular Abdullah Shafique dropping Mitch Marsh when he was on 20 runs.

Even so there were positive noises coming out of the Pakistan camp as they look to build for the future and they will want finish on a high in Sydney.

Shafique did catch the eye in the first innings when scoring 62 runs, while Shaheen Afridi and Mir Hamza both took four wickets in Australia’s second innings.

All three players will be ones to watch once again at the SCG.
