Australian Football: Aussies to look out for in the English Championship

The English Championship season is about to get underway and once again there will be a number of Australian players looking to shine.

There are number of top Aussie players plying their trade throughout Europe and eight will find themselves playing in England’s second tier.

They are just one step away from playing in the Premier League, which is still regarded as the best league in European football.

Let’s take a closer look at which Aussies will be playing in the Championship in the 2023/24 campaign.

Souttar set for key Foxes role

Socceroos central defender Harry Souttar has already had plenty of experience of playing in the Championship with Stoke City.

He made 61 appearances for the Potters before getting the chance to play in the Premier League with Leicester City.

Unfortunately for Souttar, the Foxes were relegated from the Premier League last season and he finds himself back in the Championship.

The good news for Souttar is that City are the hot fancies to win the Championship title and get back in the English top flight at the first attempt.

They are priced at 5.00 to win it and Souttar is sure to have a key role to play.

Watts hoping for Saints' opportunities

Caleb Watts is another Aussie who will be hoping to play his part in a promotion campaign with Southampton.

Like Leicester, Southampton were relegated from the Premier League last season and will be keen to bounce back immediately. They are priced at 3.25 to do so.

The midfielder has struggled to make an impact at Southampton and has spent time away from the club while on loan with Morecambe last season.

Now Saints are in the Championship, Watts will be hoping to get more of chance.

Boro add to Aussie contingent

One of the big moves of the close season has seen goalkeeper Tom Glover make the switch from Melbourne City to Middlesbrough.

Glover made the number one jersey his own at City, and now all eyes will be on him to see how he shapes up in the English Championship.

It is a big step up for the 25-year-old and he follows in the footsteps of another famous Australian goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer.

His first task will be to try and become a regular in the Boro side and he faces strong competition from James Jones and Seny Dieng.

Middlesbrough have high hopes for the season ahead and they are priced at 4.00 to win promotion to the Premier League.

They will also be helped by two other Australians in their squad, so Glover should be made to feel at home.

Riley McGree has spent the last couple of seasons with Middlesbrough and the midfielder was a regular in their side last season.

Like Glover, Samuel Silvera is also set for a debut season with Boro after swapping the A-League for the Championship.

The 22-year-old attacker played every game for the Central Coast Mariners last season as they went on to win the A-League grand final.

Now he makes the step up to the Championship and has all the attributes to be a big success.

Burgess steps up with promoted Town

Defender Cameron Burgess helped Ipswich Town to win promotion from League One to the Championship last season and they will be hoping to go well again this season.

The Tractor Boys are priced at 6.00 to win promotion and they also have another Aussie on board in the form of midfielder Massimo Luongo.

Triantis tries his luck with Black Cats

Twenty-year-old defender Nectarios Triantis is another player to leave the Central Coast Mariners for a crack at the Championship with Sunderland.

Triantis played in the grand final win over Melbourne City and will now be looking to force his way into the Sunderland side.

Meanwhile, Jacob Chapman is on the books of Huddersfield Town and the 22-year-old goalkeeper will be hoping to get his first minutes for them this season. If not another loan move looks to be on the cards.

Marlee Francois Diop will also be hoping to get more minutes with Bristol City. The 20-year-old attacker has yet to make a senior start for the Robins.
