Cricket World Cup: Australia gunning for sixth success

The 13th edition of the Men's Cricket World Cup will be hosted by India later this year and Australia will be gunning for glory once again.

The Baggy Greens have won the World Cup on five previous occasions, with their last success coming in 2015 when they beat New Zealand in the final.

They lost in the semi-final in England in 2019 and now the aim will be to bounce back with glory in India, with the tournament taking place in October and November 2023.

Australia are up there with the hot fancies, and are priced at 5.00 to go on and win the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

Host nation India can be backed at 3.20, while reigning champions England are available at 4.00.

World Cup format

Ten teams will participate in the Cricket World Cup in India, with the group stage of the tournament set to get underway on 5th October.

Australia will play each of the other nine teams on one occasion and when all the Group games are done, the top four teams will go through to the semi-finals.

It goes without saying that Australia will want to make the semi-finals at the very least, but it will be far from easy and the competition will be fierce.

Pakistan, New Zealand and South Africa all loom as real threats to make the top four along with the Aussies, India and England.

Realistically, the semis should be made up from four of those six teams.

Since the ICC Cricket World Cup began back in 1975, Australia have only failed to get as far as the semi-finals on four occasions.

The last time that happened was in 2011, when they went out at the quarter-final stage.

Australia's World Cup schedule

Australia have a baptism of fire when they take on the host nation India in their very first game on 8th October in Chennai.

There will be no easing into the tournament and Australia will be keen to put a marker down straight away.

Getting off to a strong start will be important and can help build momentum for the rest of the tournament.

Next up on 13th October, Australia will play South Africa. That game is followed by meetings with Pakistan and New Zealand, before they take on the old enemy England.

The match against the Three Lions will take place in Ahmedabad on 4th November.

Australia wrap up their Group stage with a match against Bangladesh on 12th November and they will be hoping that their place in the top four is sealed by then.

What are Australia's chances of success?

The conditions will of course play a huge part in Australia’s hopes of winning the 2023 World Cup.

It will also come down to who can handle them the best. Of course host nation India will be most suited to them and that is one of the reasons they are highly fancied to go all the way.

However, Australia have shown they can play well in India and will take huge confidence from their recent tour.

The Aussies defeated India on their own patch in a three-match ODI series back in March of this year.

India won the first match in Mumbai by five wickets, but the tourists came roaring back to take the next two.

They levelled the series with a 10-wicket victory in Visakhapatnam, before edging home in the series decider in Chennai by 21 runs.

If Australia can produce similar performances later this year, they could be on the way to their sixth Cricket World Cup success.
