Australian Football – A look at the week ahead

There is plenty to look forward to in the week ahead with the Big Bash League set to reach its conclusion while the A-League will also continue with Matchday 15.

There is a slight lull in sporting action down under now the Australian Open tennis is done and dusted but it will not be long before the action soon ramps up again.

The Australian cricket team jet out to India on Tuesday to play a four-match Test series which will get underway on 9th February. Then both the AFL and NRL seasons will be upon us and the games will be coming thick and fast.

So for now we have the A-League and BBL12 to keep us ticking over and it looks sure to be an exciting week of action.

The BBL12 champions will be crowned, with the Perth Scorchers looking to be the team to beat, while in the A-League there are some big games to look forward to. Let’s take a closer look at what is on the agenda for the week ahead.

A-League – Victory set for must-win Nix clash

Matchday 15 gets underway on Friday night when Melbourne Victory take on Wellington Phoenix and Tony Popovic’s men are desperate to pick up all three points.

One of the shocks of the season so far is the fact that Victory sit bottom of the ladder after 13 games and have only picked up three wins. The pressure is starting to mount on Popovic and he needs a win against the Nix, who sit fourth on the ladder with three wins out of the last four games.

Victory are priced at 11/10 to get the win, Phoenix 12/5 while the draw is also 12/5.

Victory and Sydney set for Big Blue showdown

There are four games to look forward to on a ‘Super Saturday’ with leaders Melbourne City getting things underway when they take on Macarthur.

City will be looking for their first win in four games after being held to yet another draw against Adelaide United in their last game and they are priced at 8/15 to beat the Bulls, who are 5/1 to cause an upset. Sydney FC returned to winning ways at the weekend to ease the pressure on under-fire coach Steve Corica and they need to build on it when they face Central Coast Mariners.

It will be far from easy though against a Mariners side that sit second on the ladder and are still the closest challengers to Melbourne City. Sydney can be backed at 6/5 to get the home win with Central Coast available at 23/10.

Adelaide United have suffered just one defeat in the last five games and will be out to cement their place in the top six of the A-League when they entertain Brisbane Roar. Roar were hammered 4-0 by Newcastle this weekend and can be backed at 14/5 to cause an upset. Adelaide are 10/11 with the draw 13/5.

To wrap up the action on Saturday Perth Glory will be out to maintain their recent hot streak of form when they take on the Jets. Glory are priced at 13/10 to win the game with Newcastle available at 2-1.

There is just the one game on Sunday to wrap up Matchday 15. It sees third place Western Sydney Wanderers take on Western United with the home side 11/10 to end a run of three straight draws with a win.

It is a game that Mark Rudan’s side really need to win if they are to have a chance of closing the gap on Melbourne City.

Big Bash League – Scorchers await in the final

It has been a superb summer of Big Bash League cricket in Australia but it will all come to an end in the week ahead. The Perth Scorchers have already booked their place in the final that will take place on their own patch, Optus Stadium, on Saturday 4th February.

Up to 60,000 spectators are expected to pack into the stadium and now the battle is on to see who will join the Scorchers in the final. The Sydney Sixers are one step closer and get another chance.

They await in the ‘Challenger’ after losing to the Scorchers on Saturday. The match will be played at the SCG on Thursday 2nd February and the Sixers will take on either the Melbourne Renegades or Brisbane Heat.
