Australian Football: A look at the week ahead

There is another big week of action to look forward to in the A-League, the Australian cricket team need a response in the second Test against India, while it is also time for the Rugby League World Club Challenge.

It is time for Matchday 17 in the A-League and there is another big derby clash on the cards, this time in Melbourne. Bottom face top when Victory entertain City at AAMI Park.

There are also five other games on the fixture list as the battle to make finals and also avoid the wooden spoon hots up. It is also a big week for the Australian cricket team after they suffered a record-breaking and humiliating defeat in the first Test against India.

They could not play any worse in the second Test but there needs to be a big improvement if they are to make a game of it and take a step to getting the fans back on board.

And finally with the NRL season fast approaching we have some Rugby League to look forward to with Penrith Panthers taking on St Helens in the World Club Challenge. Let’s look at the agenda for the week ahead.

A-League: Melbourne derby the highlight

The action gets underway on Friday night when struggling Western United take on a Wellington Phoenix side that are pushing to play finals this season.

Western are priced at 7/4 to get the win, the Nix 6/4, while the draw can be backed at 12/5. There are four games to look forward to on Saturday with the stand-out fixture being the Melbourne derby between Victory and City.

Sydney FC will look to make it four wins on the bounce when they entertain struggling Brisbane Roar and they are priced at 19/20 to do so. Central Coast Mariners, who sit in second, face a tricky trip to WA to face Perth Glory and are priced at 5/4 to pick up a crucial three points.

It is a big one as well as third-place Adelaide United take on Western Sydney Wanderers who sit in fourth. Just two points separate the two sides and Adelaide will be full of confidence after winning their last two games.

Western Sydney on the other hand will be smarting after losing the derby clash against Sydney FC and will be determined to bounce back. Adelaide are priced at 6/5 to win the game at Coopers Stadium, while the Wanderers are 21/10. The draw can be backed at 12/5.

Test Cricket: Aussies need a response

Australia will play their second Test match of the tour of India in the week ahead and they are in need of a response following a humiliating loss in the first Test. India won by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test as Australia were skittled out for 177 runs in the first innings and just 91 runs in the second.

Dealing with the conditions in India was always going to be a challenge but no-one would have expected a collapse like that.

Attention now turns to the second Test with India priced at 1/2 to win it. Australia are 10/3 and the draw can be backed at 11/2. Expect a host of changes in the Australian team.

Rugby League: Saints attempt to upset Penrith

The Rugby League World Club Challenge is set to take place on Saturday night when Penrith Panthers entertain English Super League side St Helens. Traditionally the World Club Challenge sees the champions of both the NRL and Super League go head-to-head in a one-off match and this one could be a cracker.

The Panthers will be the hot fancies to take the crown but Saints look ready for the battle. The men from the UK tuned up for the showdown by beating NRL side St George Illawarra Dragons 30-18 on Saturday.

The clash with the Panthers will be another kettle of fish altogether but Saints do look ready to rumble. The match will take place at the Panthers BlueBet Stadium with the kick-off time 18:00 (AEDT).
