Australian Football: Melbourne City set for tough Adelaide Test

Melbourne City will face one of their toughest tests of the season when they take on Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Friday night.

City are the clear leaders at the top of the NRL ladder and have only lost two games all season but they should be in for a real battle against the Reds who sit in fourth place.

It looks set to be an exciting Matchday 18 in the A-League and there is no better game to get it underway than United versus City.

The home side are fighting hard to clinch second spot ahead of Central Coast Mariners and Western Sydney Wanderers, and three points against City would give them a huge lift.

As far as City are concerned it is all about wrapping up the minor premiership as soon as possible so they can begin to prepare for the finals.

They are priced at 2.10 to win the Grand Final, while Adelaide can be backed at 8.00 to do the same. We could be in for an exciting goal-fest in South Australia on Friday night so let’s take a closer look at both sides as kick-off fast approaches.

What:Adelaide United v Melbourne City
Where:Coopers Stadium
When:19:45 (AEST) Friday 3rd March 2023
How to watch:Paramount+
Odds:Adelaide 3.75, Draw 3.80, Melbourne 1.90

Goals galore predicted at Coopers

Adelaide United are bang in form at the moment and have not lost in the last seven games to move to fourth spot on the ladder. They have probably drawn more games than they would have liked, four out of the seven to be precise, however they are picking up points and moving forward so there can be no complaints.

Takeaways from Matchday 18

Sunday set for The Original Rivalry

City look to bounce back against Sky Blues

The Reds fought out a 3-3 draw against City at AAMI Park on 29th January and have also been involved in a 4-4 draw with Western Sydney Wanderers recently.

So while they have no problem scoring goals they do have an issue letting them in at times. Combined with Melbourne City’s attacking prowess it means we could be in for a high-scoring game on Friday night.

Indeed over 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 1.57 and both sides to score in the game is available at 1.50. The Reds will be missing Josh Cavallo who is a long-term injury casualty with a ruptured Achilles, but apart from that coach Carl Veart has a strong squad to choose from.

Nestory Irankunda came off the bench to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw with Melbourne Victory last week and will be hoping he has done enough to earn a place in the starting line-up, however the bench looks more likely.

Irankunda can be backed at 3.10 to score at anytime during the game if he does get on to the field.

Adelaide probable XI: Gauci; Lopez, Ansell, Popovic, Kitto; D'Arrigo, Alagich; Halloran, Clough, Goodwin; Ibusuki.

City look to consolidate top spot

Melbourne City have been involved in two five-goal thrillers in the last two weeks and you cannot rule out another one on Friday night. City have won one and lost one of the thrillers and a 3-2 City win on Friday night can be backed at 19.00.

City are sitting very pretty at the top of the ladder and have a nine-point lead over the Mariners, Wanderers and Adelaide. They also have a game in hand, so if they can manage another three points on Friday night they will take another massive step towards the minor premiership.

They have conceded two goals in each of the last three games though and will need to tighten up at the back if they are to leave Adelaide with all three points. City have plenty of match-winners in their ranks but they will be without one of them in the form of Mathew Leckie.

The Socceroos ace has suffered a hamstring injury and is looking at a six-week spell on the sidelines, which is a huge blow for the ladder-leaders. Arion Sulemani is also on the sidelines but for much longer after damaging his ACL. Jamie Maclaren is always the biggest threat for Melbourne City and he is priced at 1.66 to score at anytime during the game.

Melbourne City probable XI: Glover; Bos, Lam, Reis, Talbor; O'Neill; Nabbout, Van der Venne, Berisha, Tilo; Maclaren.
