Australian Football: Melbourne Victory v Wellington Phoenix

Melbourne Victory will attempt to pick up just their fourth win of the season on Friday night but it will be far from easy against high-flying Wellington Phoenix.

Victory are having a season to forget so far and it went from bad to worse as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Sydney FC last weekend.

Tony Popovic’s men sit bottom of the ladder with just 11 points from their 13 games so far and they remain seven points away from the top six, albeit with a game in hand.

That game in hand is against ladder-leaders Melbourne City though so it is unlikely they would pick up the three points anyway. Even so they need to start winning games and there would be no better place to start than against the Nix on Friday night.

It will be easier said than done though as Wellington are unbeaten in four games and are sitting pretty in fourth spot. There is the possibility of Ufuk Talay’s men jumping into second spot if they win and other results go their way in Matchday 15.

It is a cracking game to kick off the round so let’s take a closer look at both teams.

Home form a concern for Victory

Victory have not won an A-League game in six attempts and after picking up just three wins all season, it is no surprise they sit bottom of the ladder. Another big concern for under-fire coach Tony Popovic is the fact they have only won one game at home.

Goals galore as City held again

City target return to winning ways

That came courtesy of a 4-0 win over the Newcastle Jets way back on 4th November. It means that Wellington Phoenix should have nothing to fear when the two sides clash as Victory have hardly made AAMI Park a fortress.

It is something they need to start as five of their next seven games are on home soil and it could be the perfect chance to climb the ladder. Scoring goals has also been an issue for Victory.

They have only found the back of the net on 12 occasions and four of those goals came in the win over the Jets. If another low-scoring affair is on the cards then under 2.5 goals can be backed at 1/1.

Victory would love to have experienced Portguese ace Nani back available but it looks as though the game could come a bit too soon. However Popovic could be tempted to put him on the bench.

Popovic has also moved to bolster his attacking ranks with the addition of Bruce Kamau and the new boy is in line to make his debut. Jake Brimmer has scored two goals so far this season and can be backed at 11/4 to score any time against the Phoenix.

Victory probable: Acton; Geria, Bozinovski, Spiranovic, Smith; Brillante, Broxham; Velupillay, Brimmer, Folami; Kamau.

Phoenix on fire

Phoenix were held to a 2-2 draw against Perth Glory last week but had won their previous three games when beating Sydney FC, Brisbane Roar and Central Coast Mariners before that.

They are bang in form and will be looking to keep the good run going when they travel to Melbourne. The wins against Sydney and Brisbane were away from home, while they have also been to Melbourne already this season when drawing 2-2 with City. So they do travel well.

Scoring goals has not been an issue this season as they have banged home 24. However letting them in is a problem. They have conceded 21 already this season. They need to tighten that up if they are to go deep into finals this season.

The Nix will be forced into one change this week as Tim Payne will serve a one-match suspension following his sending off against Perth Glory last week.

Finn Surman is the man most likely to slot in. Oskar Zawada has scored four goals in the last four games and can be backed at 2/1 to score anytime.

Phoenix (probable) Sail; Elliot, Laws, Surman, Mauragis; Ball, Lewis, Kraev, Rufer; Barbarouses, Zawada.
