Australian Football: Newcastle Jets v Brisbane Roar preview

Eleventh faces ninth in the A-League on Friday night when the Newcastle Jets go head-to-head with Brisbane Roar in a big game for both sides.

Just two points and two places separate them, but wins have been hard to come by for both sides who need to get their act together to have any chance of making the play-offs.

The good news is there is not much between them and the top six and a decent run of results could take you into the play-off positions. That is much easier said than done though. Both the Jets and Roar have won one game in the last five.

Scoring goals has also been an issue, they have the two worst records in the whole competition. However we can keep our fingers crossed for a high-scoring thriller. A win for either could see them climb the ladder and receive a big boost in confidence, so the stakes are high at McDonald Jones Stadium in the Hunter.

Let’s take a closer look at both sides with kick-off fast approaching.

What:Newcastle Jets v Brisbane Roar
Where:McDonald Jones Stadium, Sydney
When:19:45 (AEST) Friday 27th January, 2023
How to watch:Paramount+
Odds:Jets 7/4, Roar 8/5, Draw 23/10

Papas set to keep the faith

The Jets started the season in good form and looked set to improve on last season’s ninth-place finish in the A-League. However they have since gone off the boil and find themselves just one place above bottom side Melbourne Victory.

The Jets have not won in the last four games, drawing two and losing two, so they are in desperate need of three points when they face Brisbane. A win could see them leapfrog Roar but there will need to be a big improvement and they also need to find their shooting boots.

They have scored just 11 goals this season and only Roar, who have 10, have scored less. So we could be in for a low-scoring affair. A goalless draw can be backed at 9/1

Beka Mikeltadze and Trent Buhagiar have been leading the line for the Jets this season but only have two goals each. Mikeltadze is priced at 2/1 to score any time during the game.

Coach Arthur Papas could be weighing up his options and both Reno Piscopo and Archie Goodwin are pushing for a place in the starting line-up. That said, it is more than likely that Papas will stick with the same side that has drawn the last two games against Western United and Western Sydney Wanderers.

Newcastle Jets (possible) Duncan; Ingham, Jenkinson, Jurman, McGarry; Thurgate, Dartsmelia; Stynes, Sotirio; Mikeltadze, Buhagiar.

Roar eyeing top six

Roar have been the draw specialists so far in the 2022/23 A-League campaign. Warren Moon’s side have drawn seven of their 13 games, including a 0-0 against Melbourne City last time out.

That was a solid result and should give them some confidence following back-to-back defeats against Perth Glory and Wellington Phoenix. Amazingly a win could take them into the top six if other results go their way, but like the Jets, scoring goals is an issue.

They have 10 all season and just one in the last three games. Only on one occasion this season have they scored more than one goal in a game. Unlike Newcastle, who have conceded 21 goals so far this season, at least Roar have been keeping it tight with a solid defence that have leaked just 10 goals.

A low scoring affair looks to be on the cards and under 2.5 goals can be backed at 4/5. Roar have not been helped by the shock departure of marquee striker Charlie Austin, while Cyrus Dehmie has also moved on. Riku Danzaki also appears to be heading for the exit door so Moon is lacking options in attack for the rest of the season.

Carlo Armiento is now the dangerman for Brisbane and he will be out to add to the three goals he has scored so far this season. Joe Knowles and Jay O’Shea are also pushing for a place in the starting line-up and are likely to figure.

Brisbane Roar (possible) Holmes; Neville, Aldred, Chapman; Hingert, Courtney-Perkins, Zabala, Trewin; O'Shea; Armiento, Knowles.
