Australian Football: Sunday set for The Original Rivalry

The Original Rivalry dates back to 2005 and the latest edition will take place on Sunday when Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United lock horns.

There is no love lost between these two clubs and their supporters and the atmosphere is always a hot one. We can expect more of the same on Sunday with the two teams at opposite ends of the ladder.

In the second game of the day another team near the bottom, Brisbane Roar, entertain Perth Glory. It has been an exciting weekend of action so far with plenty more goals flying in on Saturday afternoon and hopefully that will continue on Sunday.

Melbourne City edged out Sydney FC in a thrilling 3-2 win, while Western United pulled off a surprise 3-1 win away at Newcastle Jets. Western Sydney Wanderers also smashed Macarthur FC 4-0, but the focus now turns to the action on Sunday. Let’s take a closer look at both games.

What:Melbourne Victory v Adelaide United
Where:AAMI Park
When:15:00 (AEST) Sunday 26th February
How to watch:Paramount+
Odds:Victory 2.15, Draw 3.50, United 3.30

It is a little bit different how there can be such a fierce rivalry between one team from South Australia and one from Victoria but that is the case with these two. The rivalry really grew after Victory defeated United in both the 2007 and 2009 A-League grand final and remains stronger than ever today.

So we can expect a hot game on Sunday with maybe the chance of a red card if things boil over on the pitch. A red card in the match can be backed at 4.33.

The two sides have already played each other this season with United smashing Victory 3-0 at Coopers Stadium. That has been the story of the season so far as Adelaide are going well. Victory not so.

Plenty at stake for Reds and Wanderers

However such is the nature of this fixture, the form book can sometimes go out of the window. Adelaide sit fourth on the ladder and are unbeaten in their last six games. However they will be smarting a little after allowing a 4-2 lead slip against Western Sydney last week and drawing 4-4.

The Reds have also been involved in a 3-2 win and 3-3 draw so another high-scoring game could be on the cards. Over 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 1.66.

Victory should be on a high after shocking Melbourne City 3-2 in the derby last week and will relish the chance to build on it in another massive game. They do have a couple of games in hand on the top six so making finals cannot be completely ruled out.

However they do need to find consistency. Adelaide have been rocked by the news that Josh Cavallo is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles last week. Victory also have their issues with Rai Marchan and Nani among the players on the sidelines.

What:Brisbane Roar v Perth Glory
Where:Dolphin Stadium
When:17:00 (AEST) Sunday 26th February
How to watch:Paramount+
Odds:Roar 2.00, Draw 3.50, Glory 3.75

Following Victory’s win last weekend Roar have now dropped to the bottom of the A-League and are in danger of picking up the wooden spoon.

It has also resulted in Warren Moon being sacked as coach with Nick Green being appointed on an interim basis. Roar have not lost many games this season, just six. The six teams above them have lost more. However they have drawn way too many, eight to be precise.

If they had turned some of those into wins then they would be in the mix for finals and would have kept Moon in a job. Glory also like a draw so another one could be on the cards on Sunday. Indeed a 1-1 draw can be back at 6.50. Glory have drawn three of the last four, losing the other one and have seen their push for the top six falter.

The men from the west need to get back on a winning run and will see the trip to Brisbane as an opportunity. However they have won just one game on their travels this season so it will be easier said than done.

Glory will be boosted by the return of their skipper Mustafa Amini who has recovered from injury, while influential defender Daryl Lachman is back from suspension. Brisbane have no injury or suspension issues.
