Australian Football: Victory target derby upset

There are four A-League games to look forward to on Saturday with the Melbourne derby between Victory and City topping the bill.

Matchday 17 got underway on Friday night with Wellington Phoenix returning to winning ways as they piled more misery om Western United.

The Nix ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at AAMI Park to breathe new life into their finals hopes and put another nail in Western’s top six chances. Now all the attention turns to Saturday’s action and it looks to be an exciting fixture list with some big games on the agenda.

The stand-out fixture has to be the Melbourne derby with 10 places and 20 points separating the two sides as City continue to set the pace at the top. Can Victory cause a big upset? Only time will tell.

Sydney FC will also look to make it four wins on the bounce against Brisbane Roar, while Macarthur are out or back-to-back wins when they face the Newcastle Jets.

To wrap up the action on Saturday high-flying Central Coast Mariners are in the west to take on Perth Glory. We are hoping for lots of goals and excitement. Let’s take a closer look at each game.

What:Sydney FC v Brisbane Roar
Where:Allianz Stadium
When:17:00 (AEST) Saturday 18th February 2023
How to watch:Paramount+
Odds:Sydney 19/20, Draw 5/2, Roar 3/1

Sydney FC are the form team in the A-League after winning their last three games and they will be looking to make it four against Brisbane Roar.

Roar have lost their last three so the Sky Blues will fancy their chances of getting the job done and potentially climbing as high as third on the ladder. They will have to do it without star striker Adam Le Fondre though after he picked up a hamstring injury in last week’s 1-0 win over Western Sydney Wanderers.

A look at the week ahead

Victory target back-to-back wins

Roar have conceded eights goals in the last three games and have scored just two. Scoring goals has been a big issue all season and they have just 12 in total. Warren Moon’s men have however been boosted by the return of Robbie Kruse.

What:Macarthur v Newcastle Jets
Where:Campbelltown Stadium
When:18:00 (AEST) Saturday 18th February 2023
How to watch:Paramount+
Odds:Macarthur 29/20, Draw 5/2, Jets 9/5

Macarthur have finally ended a dismal run of form by picking up a win and now need to back it up with another three points against the Jets. These two are locked together on 21 points with the Jets in seventh spot on the ladder and Macarthur in eighth.

There is plenty riding on this game as both sides attempt to break into the top six and play finals at the end of the season. Macarthur may not want to change a winning team so could face a dilemma as Jonathan Aspropotamitis returns from injury.

Tomislav Uskok is out through suspension. The Jets are unbeaten in five and picked up a solid 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory last week.

What:Melbourne Victory v Melbourne City
Where:AAMI Park
When:19:45 (AEST) Saturday 18th February 2023
How to watch:Paramount+
Odds:Victory 11/4, Draw 5/2, City 1/1

On paper Melbourne City should win this one by a country mile, but it is a derby clash and sometimes the form book can go out of the window.

City are back on top form following a run of draws. They have won the last two and scored a total of nine goals, while Victory are leaking goals for fun. It does have the makings of a high-scoring City win and over 2.5 goals can be backed at 4/5.

City have no injury and suspension worries and their squad is actually stronger this week as Curtis Good returns from suspension. Victory are boosted by the return of Jason Geria and Paul Izzo but they will have to cut out the silly mistakes and tighten up at the back if they are to have any chance of causing an upset.

What:Perth Glory v Central Coast Mariners
Where:Macedonia Park
When:22:00 (AEST) Saturday 18th February 2023
How to watch:Paramount+
Odds:Glory 2/1, Draw 5/2, Mariners 13/10

The Perth Glory revival stuttered last week as they suffered a 4-2 home defeat against Melbourne City. They have also drawn far too many games but at least get the chance to bounce back on home soil against the Mariners.

Central Coast ended a run of three games without a win by beating Brisbane Roar last week and they need another three points here to consolidate their position of second place on the ladder.

Glory have been hit by the news that influential defender Darryl Lachman will be missing through suspension.
