Australian Football: Wanderers need three points in the West

Western Sydney Wanderers will be out to keep the pressure on at the top of the A-League ladder when they take on struggling Perth Glory on Friday night.

Matchday 20 gets underway at HBF Park in Western Australia and it looks set to be a big few days of action with some crucial games taking place from Friday to Monday.

None more so that Glory versus the Wanderers as the visitors look to close the gap on Melbourne City at the top, while the home side are out to avoid the wooden spoon at the bottom.

Despite a massive 11-point gap between these two sides, nothing can be taken for granted in the A-League this season. There have been some crazy results that defy the odds and formbook, so Glory certainly cannot be written off as they return to HBF Park for the first time this season.

It’s a big game to kick-off Matchday 20 so let’s take a closer look at both sides.

Glory fight to avoid wooden spoon

Glory are once again battling to avoid the wooden spoon following a horror slide down the ladder to 11th position. This after they had recovered from a horror start to push themselves into contention for a return to finals. It is a season that will leave the Glory faithful pulling their hair out.

Ruben Zadkovich’s side have not won in the last six games and that is mainly down to the fact they concede way too many goals. In five of the games the last six games they have let two in, and the other against Melbourne City, they conceded four. Scoring goals has not been a problem.

Bulls and Roar ready to battle it out

Adelaide win puts the pressure on

They have scored 11 during those six games, but you cannot leave yourself needing to score three a game to pick up the three points. It is no surprise then that over 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 1.90. The last two defeats will have set alarm bells ringing.

Both 2-1 and both against teams down near the bottom, Brisbane Roar and Western United. Glory have also drawn too many. Three games have recently ended 2-2 and such a scoreline on Friday night can be backed at 13.00.

Considering the Wanderers have drawn seven games this season and have conceded more goals than any team inside the top seven, such a scoreline is not unrealistic. Zadkovich has the option of bringing Ryan Williams back into the side after he served a one-match suspension.

However Glory will still be without the influential Darryl Lachmann at the back but Salim Khelifi is likely to keep his place.

Wanderers target another win

Mark Rudan’s side are on a high after winning the last two games, and look to be in with a great chance of landing win number three in Perth. Last weekend’s 2-0 win over Central Coast Mariners was huge as it moved them to second place on the ladder and put a big dent in the opposition’s hopes of finishing just below Melbourne City.

Wanderers have been scoring plenty of goals recently, bagging a total of 10 in the last three games and they will be out to exploit Glory’s leaky defence. Brandon Borrello is the man in form in front of goal when scoring a goal in each of the last three games. He can be backed at 4.00 to score anytime on Friday night.

The form they are in, Wanderers are capable of putting a big score on the Glory and a 3-0 victory can be backed at 23.00. With Adelaide United, who beat Melbourne City last week, level on points with the Wanderers, it is important that the red and blacks pick up a win in Perth.

Both Adelaide and City have very winnable games so it’s important Wanderers do the same to keep things tight and stay in the mix for the title. Western Sydney can be backed at 9.00 to go on and win the A-League Grand Final this season.

Rudan will be forced into one change for the game though as Marcelo is suspended following his sending off last week. Tom Beadling is set to replace him in a like-for-like swap. Apart from that the visitors have a fully fit squad to select from.
