The Australian Guineas is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds which is run at set weights at Flemington racecourse, Melbourne, in March.

The Australian Guineas is one of the premier races for three-year-olds and forms part of the Victorian Racing Club carnival.

It is raced over 1600m at the famous Flemington track and with $1million in prizemoney up for grabs, attracts a top-class field.

The exact start time for the Australian Guineas has yet to be announced, but is usually Race 7 on a bumper card, which will also include the Group 2 Blarney Stakes and Group 3 Tressday Stakes.

The Australian Guineas is relatively new on the racing calendar, compared to some races, and was first raced in 1986.

True Version was the first horse to win the Australian Guineas.

It has gone by other names, including the Cadbury Guineas and Crown Guineas, but reverted to the Australian Guineas in 2011 and has stayed that way since.

The Australian Guineas began as a Group 3 race in 1986, but has been a Group 1 since 1987.

It was raced over 2000m from 1998 to 2000, but switched back to 1600m from 2001.

There is a total prize pot of $1million for the Australian Guineas, with the winner taking home $600,000.

Second wins $180,000 and third $90,000. Sixth, seventh and eighth all pick up $20,000 for their efforts.

Australian Guineas previous winners

Legarto was the winner of the 2023 Australian Guineas for trainers Ken and Bev Kelso, and jockey Michael Dee.

There have been many famous winners of the Australian Guineas, but one of the most popular was Miss Finland in 2007.

Miss Finland had already won the Golden Slipper, Thousand Guineas and Crown Oaks before adding the Australian Guineas to the honours board.

Zabeel, Mahogany, Flying Spur and Hey Doc are also among the other notable winners.
