Australian Racing: A Royale upset on the cards

Race 2 Sunshine Coast

Easier Said @ 4.40

Race 1 Pakenham

Explosive Rosie @ 2.60

Royale to spring Newcastle upset

In the previously mentioned Newcastle Stakes the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Cross Talk is expected to jump as a short-priced favourite. The five-year-old showed good form when placing at this level in the Bill Ritchie over this distance at Randwick last September.

The gelding was beaten just over two lengths on a soft 7 surface having raced in second for much of the race on that occasion. The son of Keano returned in 2023 with a one-and-a-half-length second dropping to a Benchmark 100 event at Rosehill last month.

However Cuban Royale, who finished close behind Cross Talk in the aforementioned Rosehill contest is taken to spring an upset. Brock Ryan’s mount had won the competitive Drinkwise Carrington Stakes over this trip at Randwick prior to that Rosehill effort.

Has delivered two other wins this spell and while a veteran performer at eight-years-old he has shown no signs of slowing down. Well drawn in six the son of Casino Prince is selected to register an 11th career success on his first start at this venue.

Said to score at Sunshine Coast

The second race at Sunshine Coast is an interesting 1600m Benchmark 58 contest. A good 4 track is forecast for the contest with top weight Tuscany Bound expected to have his supporters with Nikita Beriman up.

The four-year-old has delivered a couple of solid efforts this spell taking a step forward when finishing just over one-and-a-half-lengths back in fourth here last month.

That effort came at Benchmark 65 level and he should appreciate the drop in grade racing third up. Preference however is for the Lauren Abbott-trained Easier Said who is a regular at this venue with her tenth over 1400m here a month ago her sixth start at this venue this spell.

While disappointing on that occasion the five-year-old followed that up with a close second in a 1640m Class 1 event at Doomben. Encountered a soft 7 track at Doomben but notably her only previous win, in a 1700m maiden at Gold Coast in August came on the good 4 going expected here.

Well drawn in two she is taken to deliver a winning effort under Georgina Cartwright.

Rosie for Pakenham triumph

Jalpido is likely to prove popular in the market in the opening maiden plate at Pakenham. The race, a 1000m contest set to take place on a good 4 surface has attracted a field of ten including Michael Kent’s gelding.

The son of Supido finished third on both starts last year racing from off the pace on each occasion. Both of those efforts came at Moe most recently when beaten three-and-a-half-lengths on a heavy 9 track in a 1117m contest there in August.

Tackles a sound surface for the first time here and the John Sadler-trained Explosive Rosie is the pick here. The daughter of Smart Missile showed up well when attempting to make all prior to fading in the closing stages in a course and distance maiden on February 16.

The selection jumped as favourite on that occasion and with improvement likely and well drawn in barrier five she is selected to get off the mark with Luke Nolen booked to ride.
