Australian Racing: All eyes on Rosehill Highlights

There are a number of meetings set to take place on Saturday including at Rosehill, Flemington and Eagle Farm where 10-race cards are scheduled.

Race 7 Rosehill

Highlights @ 7.50

Race 8 Flemington

Arugamama @ 6.00

Race 8 Eagle Farm

Harbourmaster @ 3.50

Highlights for Listed success

The seventh race on the Rosehill card is the Listed January Cup, a 2000m contest set to take place on a soft 5 track.

Chris Waller looks to hold a strong hand here, including with Osipenko who put some down the field efforts behind him when losing out in the Group 3 Summer Cup last time.

Racing over this distance for the first time this prep, the five-year-old placed second when racing on a good 4 surface at Randwick that day.

Jockey James McDonald is a positive jockey booking and, while his mount has performed well at a higher level in the past, preference is for HIGHLIGHTS.

The seven-year-old failed to make an impact in his first two starts this prep but he showed improved form when third in a 1400m Benchmark 100m handicap at Randwick last month.

This gelding was beaten less than a length on that occasion and he went on to fill third place in the Wyong Leagues Group $500,000 The Lakes at Wyong last weekend.

Highlights wasn’t beaten far last time and he gets in off a low weight here, with Zac Lloyd taking the ride for the first time.

The son of Your Song is stepping up in distance here, however, he represents an in-form stable in that of Bjorn Baker and with the wet track in his favour he is taken to record his first win since June.

Arugamama for Flemington glory

The eighth race of the day at Flemington is a 2000m Benchmark 100 handicap expected to take place on a good 4 surface.

Phillip Stokes’ Deakin is set to jump as favourite, racing off a low weight following a victory at Pakenham last month.

The five-year-old showed solid form in Europe, winning twice in Ireland in addition to finishing seventh in a 2414m handicap at Royal Ascot in June last year.

This son of Australia made his southern hemisphere debut when seventh over 1600m in a Benchmark 78 handicap at Ballarat.

The step up to 2000m appeared to suit when successful in a similar contest at Pakenham and while, he holds obvious claims, the in-form ARUGAMAMA is the pick.

Andrew Gluyas’ mare has a wide barrier to overcome here but she has shown good form across the border in recent starts winning twice at Morphettville.

The five-year-old’s first victory came when contesting a 2400m Benchmark 80 on the Parks course there last month.

Arugamama recorded a half-length success that day prior to going on to complete a double in impressive fashion when stepped up to 2500m on the main course there.

The mare came home three-and-a-half-lengths clear of her rivals when contesting a Benchmark 78 handicap last time.

It’s of note that Arugamama lost out narrowly when placing third in a similar race to this over course and distance 12 months ago and she looks up to recording a win under Beau Mertens.

Harbourmaster to record Eagle Farm win

The eighth race on the Eagle Farm card is a 1600m Benchmark 78 handicap contest.

A soft 5 track is expected for the race with HARBOURMASTER arriving here in good form following wins in three of his last four starts.

Two of those victories came at Toowoomba, including by nearly three lengths when contesting a Benchmark 70 handicap on good 4 track last month.

Harbourmaster raced over 1625m on that occasion and he duly completed a double when saluting by two lengths over 1500m at this circuit two weeks later.

Bailey Wheeler, on board last time out is again set to ride here and, having placed on a soft 5 track in the past, Harbourmaster looks capable of completing a hat-trick.
