Australian Racing: Artie’s Comet set to sparkle

There are six meetings set to take place on Thursday including provincial action from Albany, Townsville and New South Wales.

Race 4 Albany

Artie’s Comet @ 3.20

Race 7 Pakenham

Queen Ta Vista @ 5.00

Race 5 Gosford

Bonus Tempus @ 2.80

Comet for Albany glory

The fourth at Albany takes the eye with the 1920m Benchmark 70+ contest having attracted a field of eight. It’s tight at the top of the market with The Great One just shading it currently following some fair efforts over shorter. The eight-year-old delivered a fourth in a 1600m Benchmark 58+ contest at this venue when last in action earlier this month.

His main rivals here Brave Contender and Artie’s Comet are closely matched on form with preference for the latter who is likely to get his own way in front. Trained by Roy Rogers the pick placed second when beaten one-and-a-half-lengths by Brave Contender in a 2000m contest at Mt Barker last month.

The selection reversed that form when the pair met in a 1900m Benchmark 65+ event on a good 4 track here subsequently however. The pick has a good alley on the rail here while regular pilot Chris Nicoll returns to the saddle for this event.

Queen to rule at Pakenham

The penultimate race on the Pakenham card is an intriguing Benchmark 64 event set to take place over 1600m. The track is rated a good 4 with Divine Diosa expected to jump as favourite following two solid second place finishes at this level here this spell.

The second of those efforts came when narrowly beaten over this course and distance under her rider here Daniel Stackhouse. She sets the standard on form but she faces an unexposed rival in Queen Ta Vista who is preferred for the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott team.

The selection tried to make all prior to finishing third over 1400m on debut at Bendigo last month and took a step forward when employing similar tactics successfully at Ballarat last time out.

That Ballarat effort came over the 1600m trip she encounters here and while she is drawn widest of all in nine she is taken to get across to the rail to make all the running to complete a double.

Tempus to break maiden

The fifth race on the Gosford card is an interesting 2100m maiden contest. A soft 5 surface is forecast for the race with Subarctic expected to have his supporters stepping up in distance.

The son of So You Think gained experience in three barrier trials over around 1200m at Warwick Farm earlier this campaign. However he failed to shine in his first two starts including when beaten one rival home in a 1550m maiden at Canterbury last month.

Showed improved form when delivering a third place finish, beaten less than two-and-a-half-lengths upped to 1850m in a Class 1 at Newcastle subsequently however. He holds an ATC Australian Derby nomination but is expected to find Bonus Tempus too strong for the Brett Lazzarini stable.

The pick has had plenty of chances but delivered his best finish so far when runner-up in a 2000m maiden at Hawkesbury earlier this month. The Impending gelding did best of those racing on the speed in that contest and had delivered a fair fourth when attracting the attention of the stewards on a soft 5 track at Goulburn prior.

Bonus Tempus should appreciate the extra 100m he tackles here and he is taken to break his maiden at the 14th attempt.
