Australian Racing: Atom not a Crazy choice at Moruya

There are seven race meetings scheduled to take place on Sunday, including at Moruya, who are set to stage the main meeting in New South Wales.

They also race at Bunbury, Horsham, Mount Gambier, Sale, Sunshine Coast and Taree.

Race 5 Moruya

Crazy Atom @ 6.50

Race 7 Sale

Morrissette @ 2.70

Race 6 Bunbury

Go Go Grommet @ 1.85

Atom primed for Moruya success

The fifth race of the day at Moruya is a 1650m Class 2 handicap expected to take place on a good 4 surface.

Top weight Marks Icon is expected to jump as favourite dropping back in distance, having won by one-and-a-half-lengths in a 2000m Class 1 event at Canberra last month.

The four-year-old should have no issues with the shorter distance he tackles here, having been beaten less than two lengths when fourth in a 1600m event at Wagga three starts back.

Trained by Darrell Burnet the gelding rates highly on his first start in a Class 2 contest, however, preference is for CRAZY ATOM.

The daughter of Atomic registered some good efforts over 1600m earlier this year, including when taking out a Class 1 set weights event over the distance at Albury in May.

The 6.50 pick has placed over that distance in the interim period and it’s of note that her recent efforts have come over shorter distances.

Those recent efforts include a fourth of six when racing over 1200m in a Benchmark 50 handicap at this track early last month.

Two outings at Canberra have followed, including when down the field in a 1400m Class 2 handicap held on a wet track earlier this month.

The return to a forecast sound surface is in the mare’s favour here and she is taken to salute under Louise Day.

Morrissette to score for Goodwin

The penultimate race at Sale is a 2200m Benchmark 58 handicap event.

Genrichero is expected to prove popular with punters, having recorded some good efforts in defeat so far this season.

Those efforts include a one-length defeat when placing second in a 2050m Benchmark 64 handicap held on a soft 5 track at Wodonga at the end of last month.

Matt Laurie’s gelding has gone on to finish fourth when beaten just over four lengths at Mornington.

The drop in grade is in the four-year-old’s favour in this contest and he rates highly, with apprentice Dakotah Keane taking an addition two-kilograms off the gelding’s back.

Reece Goodwin’s MORRISSETTE is the selection here though, with the mare set to race over this distance or further for just the second time since winning at Hamilton in November last year.

The 2.70 pick came home two lengths clear of her rivals when racing at this Benchmark 58 handicap level on a good 4 track that day and similar going is expected here.

While the six-year-old has been unable to score since she has placed and has performed well in finishing fourth in two starts this prep.

Those two starts include a defeat by just under two lengths when contesting a metro Benchmark 64 handicap over 1600m on the Heath track at Caulfield first up.

The mare went on to finish fourth lengths fourth in a 1760m Benchmark 64 handicap at Geelong with both of those efforts coming on good going.

The booking of Blake Shinn takes the eye and, jumping from two off the rail, his mount looks capable of returning to winning ways.

Grommet to Go Go for Bunbury glory

The sixth race at Bunbury takes the eye, with a field of nine set to go to post for the 1000m handicap event.

A good 4 track is forecast for the race with GO GO GROMMET having shown winning form at this venue when saluting over 1211m in a Class 1 handicap here in November last year.

The 1.85 selection registered his first victory since that success when coming home a length clear of his rivals in a sixteen runner 1000m Class 3 handicap at Pinjarra on his penultimate start.

Trained by Chris & Michael Gangemi, the gelding has gone on to register a second when beaten less than a length over the same track and trip.

Jordan Turner has ridden the five-year-old in two of his three starts this prep and he looks capable of steering the son of Maschino to victory from barrier three.
