Australian Racing: Backers can be Validated at Morphettville

There’s a big day of racing with four 10-race cards set to take place, including at Moonee Valley where the Group 2 Australia Stakes is the feature race.

Race 9 Moonee Valley

Veight @ 2.30

Race 7 Randwick

Tamerlane @ 6.00

Race 9 Morphettville

Validated @ 5.00

Veight for Australia success

The previously mentioned Group 2 Australia Stakes comes up as the ninth race of the day at Moonee Valley with a field of 11 declared for the 1200m contest.

Recommendation is expected to have his supporters for the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace team, with the gelding having won twice this spell.

The second of those victories saw him deliver a narrow victory in the Listed Racing And Sports Razor Sharp Handicap over this distance at Randwick last month.

Racing on a good 4 track that day, the gelding finished strongly prior to placing second in the Listed Kia Canterbury Sprint, a Listed event over the same trip at Canterbury at the start of this month.

John Allen takes the ride for the first time since partnering the four-year-old in a Benchmark 94 handicap at Randwick in September, however VEIGHT is preferred on this occasion.

The three-year-old has won first up in both preparations so far, including when taking out the McNeil Stakes, a Group 3 event over this distance at Caulfield at the start of September.

The colt raced against his own age group that day and he went on to place second in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas over 1600m at the same venue subsequently.

The selection delivered a big effort returning to sprinting when fifth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes over this distance at Flemington in early November when last in action.

Jockey Damian Lane has won on three of his five rides on Veight and he looks up to partnering the son of Grunt to victory here.

Tamerlane for victory

The TAB Carrington Stakes is the most valuable contest on the Randwick card, with the Listed event set to take place over 1400m as the seventh race of the day.

Trainer John O’Shea can boast a 33% strike-rate (8/24) in the last 30 days and he has a number of runners in this event.

The pick of those looks to be Zoutiger, with the gelding having returned with a fifth of seven in the Listed Kia Canterbury Sprint over 1200m at Canterbury on 1st January.

The gelding appeared to appreciate the switch to front-running, when losing out narrowly in a 1300m Benchmark 100 handicap at Rosehill subsequently.

Zac Lloyd’s mount looks to hold strong claims, however, TAMERLANE is preferred despite his wide barrier allocation.

Trained by James Cummings, the six-year-old is a winner this spell including by over half-a-length when taking out the 1350m Magic Millions The Buffering at Doomben on 30th December.

The selection raced on a soft 6 track that day but has shown a liking for a sound surface in the past, including when a close fourth in the 1400m Group 2 The Damien Oliver at Flemington.

The gelding heads into this contest on the back of a fourth in a 1050m barrier trial at this venue recently and looks capable of providing Chad Schofield with a winner.

Validated to triumph in Dundridge

The Listed Dundridge Stakes over 1100m comes up as the ninth race on a 10-race Morphettville card.

VALIDATED has won twice at this track in the past, including when winning narrowly in the TAB Gytrash Series Final over 1200m in November.

The pick raced on a soft 6 track that day and has shown solid form in defeat on good 3 surfaces since, including when fourth in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes over 1400m at Flemington on 1st January.

Dominic Tourneur’s mount has had issues at the start in three of his four starts this spell but the application of blinkers should sharpen him up and he can deliver his seventh career success.
