Excelladus for Rosehill success

A heavy 9 track is expected at Rosehill with the seventh race of the day a nine runner 1400m Benchmark 88 handicap.

Ciaron Maher & David Eustace send out Danaustar with the gelding expected to prove popular with punters jumping from barrier two.

The five-year-old has shown solid form since returning from a break with a sixth at Moe, while winning two of his three subsequent outings.

The second of those saw him triumph over this trip in a Benchmark 78 handicap held on a soft 7 track at Kembla Grange in November.

The drop back in trip didn’t appear to be an issue when the gelding placed second over 1300m when racing at Randwick the following month.

However, preference here is for Joe Pride’s EXCELLADUS, who recorded some solid efforts at a lower level here in his last spell.

The gelding has returned in good form this spell, having finished fourth in Benchmark 78 handicaps at Randwick on his first two starts.

Both of those efforts saw him beaten less than two lengths including over this trip at the end of last month.

Sam Clipperton, set to ride here and on board for both of those starts, was again in the saddle when steering the gelding to victory in a similar race to this on a good 4 track at Randwick on 6th January.

The selection has won and placed on the forecast heavy going in the past and, jumping from barrier four, he is taken to complete a double.

Freedman filly to fly home

The fourth race of the day at Flemington is an 1100m Benchmark 78 handicap restricted to three-year-old fillies.

A good 4 surface is expected with Stefi Magnetica expected to jump as favourite for the Bjorn Baker stable.

The filly ended her two-year-old campaign with an impressive odds-on win over 1100m at Wellington at the end of July.

The daughter of All Too Hard raced on a soft 6 track and again encountered wet conditions when saluting by two lengths over 1010m at Orange on her return to action last month.

Jamie Kah’s mount steps up markedly in grade here and it can pay to look elsewhere for the winner of this event.

The Anthony & Sam Freedman team can boast an impressive 37% strike-rate (15/41) in the last 30 days and they send out AUSTMARR in this contest.

The top weight won twice in her last spell, following up a maiden victory over 1000m at Cranbourne in August with a success over the same trip at Sandown Hillside subsequently.

That Sandown Hillside success came by a narrow margin when tackling a Benchmark 64 handicap with both of those triumphs coming on soft 5 tracks.

The daughter of Exosphere failed to shine on a good 3 track when stepped up to 1200m for the Group 3 Scarborough Stakes at Moonee Valley subsequently with the trip looking the issue that day.

The drop back in distance is in Mark Zahra’s mount's favour and, having won fresh in the past, she is selected to resume with a victory.

Comic to triumph at Eagle Farm

The third race of the day at Eagle Farm is a 1300m three-year-old handicap and victory can go the way of top weight BOLD COMIC.

While unable to score in three starts this time around the gelding was a three-time scorer as a two-year-old and chased home a subsequent dual winner at Sunshine Coast on his penultimate start.

That effort preceded a good fifth, having raced from off the pace in the Listed Gold Edition Plate over 1200m at this track.

The gelding shaped as if this step up in trip would on that occasion with the winner, Abounding going on to take the valuable Magic Millions 3yo Guineas at Gold Coast last weekend.

The sixth and ninth from the Gold Edition Plate have also won since and, with Jasper Franklin taking three kilograms off, the son of Whittington is selected to return to winning ways.
