Australian Racing: Bumper Australia Day on the cards

There’s ten meetings to look at on Australia Day with Sandown Hillside, Warwick Farm and Fannie Bay all providing metro racing.

Race 4 Sandown Hillside

Exploring @ 8/1

Race 7 Warwick Farm

Bonny Ezra @ 6/1

Exploring to complete double

Unsurprisingly the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott team look to hold strong claims in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview at Sandown Hillside. The 1000m contest is set to take place as the fourth race on an eight-race card.

The Waterhouse and Bott team are due to saddle Aditi in the competitive looking contest. The Exceed and Excel filly debuted with a second place finish over 1000m at Flemington.

That effort came on a good 4 track in the Maribyrnong Plate at the start of October. She raced prominently that day but her subsequent absence is a slight concern here.

Jamie Kah’s mount has drawn the rail however but Exploring, the only previous winner in the field is preferred on this occasion. The selection placed second in her sole barrier trial but went one better when debuting at Flemington at the start of the month.

That triumph came over this trip in a six-runner renewal of the New Year Sprint. Partnered by veteran hoop Craig Williams, the daughter of Brazen Beau made all to make the perfect start to her career. James Cummings’ charge encounters similar underfoot conditions here and is taken to concede weight to her rivals.

Ezra to upset Ridge

The 2400m Australia Day Cup provides the feature on the Warwick Farm card. A soft 7 track is forecast for the 16-runner affair, with Spirit Ride expected to start favourite. Annabel Neasham’s charge showed good form when fourth in the 2000m Group 3 Summer Cup at Randwick on his penultimate start.

Bonny Ezra wasn’t beaten far when seventh in the Group 3 Summer Cup. Just over two lengths behind Spirit Ridge that day, the seven-year-old receives two kilograms from his rival here.

The step back up in trip should prove no issue and with a good draw in three, Chris Waller’s charge is selected to score under Brenton Avdulla.

Brazenpine for Cup success

The 1000m Darwin Cup has attracted a field of eight as the final race on Fannie Bay’s six-race card. Jade Hampson’s mount Canton Kid is expected to have his supporters following a close up fifth first up over 1100m here.

Beaten by less than two lengths in a Restricted 64 event that day, he is likely to have improved for the run. Main rival Brazenpine takes the eye here however having won half of her four starts this spell.

The daughter of Brazen Beau won by half-a-length over this course and distance just under two weeks ago. That triumph came on a good 3 surface and took her course and distance record to two wins from four starts.

Promising claimer Emma Lines, on board last time out takes the ride and the pair look capable of completing a double.
