Australian Racing: Calido to show Port Macquarie Magic

There are a number of meetings to bet on this Friday, including at Hobart where the feature race is the Hobart Guineas.

Race 6 Hobart

Azonto @ 3.20

Race 8 Wagga

Under The Hood @ 3.40

Race 6 Port Macquarie

Calido Magic @ 4.00

Azonto for Guineas glory

The previously mentioned Hobart Guineas is a 1600m contest which comes up as the sixth race on an eight-race card at Hobart.

A soft 5 track is expected for the race restricted to three-year-olds, with Magnaprime set to feature prominently in the betting for the Adam Trinder stable.

The gelding won twice earlier this season, including by half-a-length when contesting a 1220m Class 1 handicap at Launceston in October.

This son of Magnus raced on a soft 7 track that day and has raced from the front in finishing runner-up on both subsequent starts.

The most recent of those starts saw Jason Maskiell’s mount finish half-a-length second in the 1400m Steve’s Liquor Trophy over 1400m at Launceston last month.

Adam Trinder’s horses could be in better form and stepping up in distance he is expected to find AZONTO too strong.

The filly finished strongly having been ridden from off the pace when successful in the previously mentioned Steve’s Liquor Trophy at Launceston.

Azonto was racing over 1400m for just the second time that day, having caught the eye in finishing a length fifth in the 1200m McB Developments Cup at Launceston prior to that.

The Stratosphere filly is looking for her second win on turf, with her maiden success having come on the synthetic track at Devonport in September.

Azonto shapes as if the extra she tackles here will suit, while she boasts a good barrier next to the rail.

The wet track expected here is no issue and Anthony Darmanin’s mount can help trainer Barry Campbell improve on his 36% strike-rate (4/11) in the last month.

Under the Hood to break maiden

The concluding race at Wagga is an interesting 1200m maiden plate event with Jackpot Star expected to start favourite.

Trained by Matthew Dale, the gelding cost $60,000 when led through the ring at the Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale in 2023.

The son of Starcraft has had just one barrier trial, finishing a close up third in a 900m event held on a wet track at Canberra in April last year.

While the gelding represents a useful stable, he lacks the experience of some of his rivals and with that in mind, fellow three-year-old UNDER THE HOOD is preferred.

Jockey Pierre Boudvillain looks to have a strong book of rides at this meeting and his mount here performed well in finishing runner-up in a track and trip maiden in September.

Under The Hood was beaten just under four-and-a-half-lengths on that occasion, having finished in mid-division when ridden from off the pace here on debut prior.

The son of Grunt has been given a break since finishing last of four on a heavy 8 track at Kembla Grange in early October and he arrives here on the back of barrier trials.

Trainer Danielle Seib has her horses in good form at present and her representative looks up to delivering a victory in the finale.

Calido Magic for Port Macquarie success

The sixth race at Port Macquarie is a 1200m Benchmark 58 handicap set to take place on a good 4 surface.

CALIDO MAGIC has been in good form since resuming with a second at this venue in November and he ticks plenty of boxes in this contest.

The three-year-old went on to break his maiden at the second up, when getting home by a narrow margin in a 1005m maiden held on a good 4 track at Taree a month ago.

Calido Magic stepped up to 1250m for the first time when jumping at $1.80 for a Class 1 handicap at Kempsey just under two weeks later.

The gelding lost out by less than a length in finishing second on that occasion and he boasts a good barrier two from the rail here.

Regular rider Madeline Owen, on board for all three starts this prep, is again set to ride and she can partner Calido Magic to his second career win.
