Australian Racing: Campfire Jack to show Ascot spark

There are five meetings set to take place on Wednesday, including four metro fixtures.

Race 8 Caulfield

Berkeley Square @ 4.40

Race 7 Warwick Farm

Jamberoo @ 5.50

Race 5 Ascot

Campfire Jack @ 4.80

Berkeley Square to claim Cup

The Group 3 Coongy Cup over 2000m is the highlight on the Caulfield card, with the big race coming up as the concluding contest on an eight-race program.

Formerly trained in Ireland, Kingswood is expected to jump as favourite for the race, having broken through for his first southern hemisphere success last time.

The five-year-old had been freshened prior to stepping up to 1800m for a Benchmark 78 handicap at Sandown at the end of last month.

While only successful at Benchmark 78 handicap that day, the gelding impressed in winning by over two lengths when racing on a good 4 surface.

The step up in distance is expected to suit having performed well over this distance in Ireland, however, he looks opposable with top weight BERKELEY SQUARE preferred.

The gelding represents the in form Dan O’Sullivan stable with the handler boasting a 33% strike-rate (5/15) in the last month.

Berkeley Square has performed well at this level in the past, including when fifth, beaten one-and-a-half-lengths in the Easter Cup over track and trip in April.

The five-year-old has been in good form at a lower level this prep, winning his last two starts, including by a narrow margin over 1800m at Sandown last month.

Extra distance here is expected to suit Jaylah Kennedy’s mount, who looks capable of recording his third consecutive victory.

Jamberoo for Warwick Farm success

The penultimate contest on Warwick Farm’s eight-race card is a 1600m Benchmark 88 handicap.

A soft 7 track is expected with top weight Tavi Time expected to prove popular with punters racing second up.

The five-year-old resumed with a sixth when beaten just over four-and-a-half-lengths over 1400m at Rosehill last month.

Tavi Time competed in a Benchmark 88 handicap on that occasion and he has won at this level in the past.

The booking of James McDonald is a positive, however, JAMBEROO is taken to get the better of the pair in this event.

Trained by John O’Shea & Tom Charlton, the pick has shown a liking for wet tracks in the past, including when winning on the Kensington track at Randwick in August.

That triumph saw him come home two-lengths clear of his five rivals when racing over 1550m on a heavy 8 surface.

The five-year-old has made just one subsequent appearance, with that effort seeing him place second in the Bathurst Cup over 1800m at Bathurst just over a month ago.

Tommy Berry’s mount has been freshened since then and, arriving here on the back of a barrier trial win at Rosehill, he looks up to recording his fifth career win.

Campfire Jack to salute at Ascot

Ascot are set to stage an eight-race card with the fifth race an 1800m Class 1 handicap set to take place on a good 4 track.

Simon Miller’s CAMPFIRE JACK has benefitted from the fitting of blinkers in recent starts, including when runner-up at Broome in August.

The gelding broke through for his first win when saluting by four-and-a-half-lengths in a maiden at Belmont two starts later.

Campfire Jack had five rivals behind him when contesting a 2100m event that day and he proved that he can compete at this level when third in a Class 1 a week later.

That Class 1 contest saw the six-year-old beaten less than one-and-a-half-lengths over 1650m when returning to Belmont.

Campfire Jack is set to make his first start at this venue and with Shaun McGruddy, on board for his maiden success, set to ride he looks up to returning to winning ways.
