Australian Racing: Deniliquin to star at Warwick Farm

There are eight meetings for punters to get stuck into on Monday including fixtures from Sandown Lakeside and Warwick Farm.

Race 3 Warwick Farm

Deniliquin @ 5.50

Race 2 Sandown Lakeside

Sunday Buzz @ 4.20

Race 5 Ipswich

Birdonawing @ 4.60

Deniliquin to complete hat-trick

The third at Warwick Farm takes the eye with the 2400m Benchmark 78 contest set to take place on a heavy 8 track. Secret Glamour showed winning form earlier this spell when completing a double in winning a Benchmark 72 contest at Rosehill in December.

That triumph came home 1800m but she has shown she handles further since, including when a close-up seventh in the Group 3 Kia N E Manion Cup over this trip at Rosehill last month.

The drop in grade here is a positive while the four-year-old has placed on a heavy track in the past. Deniliquin is preferred on this occasion however having appeared to appreciate the step back up in distance when winning a race at this level over 2200m here on 29th March.

Prior to that the pick had recorded a narrow victory in a 2000m Benchmark 64 event held on a soft 6 track at Hawkesbury just over two weeks earlier.

The son of Adelaide is usually ridden from off the pace so the likelihood that the useful import Yarrawonga will get an easy lead is a slight concern here. Brenton Avdulla, on board last time out retains the ride and looks capable of steering the five-year-old to a sixth career success.

Buzz for staying success

The stayers are in action at Sandown Lakeside with the second race on the card a 3000m Benchmark 78 event. A heavy 8 track is expected with Sing For Peace for the Patrick Payne stable expected to start as favourite.

The son of Tavistock has performed well at a higher level over shorter in recent starts including when third in a 2400m Benchmark 84 event at Bendigo at the start of this month.

That Bendigo effort came on a good 4 track but the pick handles softer having placed on a heavy 9 track on debut, while he has also won on tracks described as soft.

The trip is a slight concern here and with proven stamina and receiving weight from the four-year-old Symon Wilde’s Sunday Buzz is taken to deliver a fourth victory.

The pick steps up in grade here following an impressive nine-length success when making all the running in a 3280m Benchmark 70 event at Warnambool last month.

Freshened since that effort he was a winner over this distance in a Benchmark 70 event on a good 3 track at Moonee Valley earlier this spell.

The five-year-old steps up to Benchmark 78 level for the first time here but looks up to delivering a victory, with his tactical versatility a positive in this event.

Bird to fly home at Ipswich

Trainer Annabel Neasham boasts a 34% strike-rate (14/41) at Ipswich in the last year and her Birdonawing looks up to delivering a victory in the fifth race on the card.

The race in question is a 1350m open handicap for three-year-old fillies. A heavy 10 track is forecast with the pick having shown she handles heavy going when placed in maiden company on a heavy 8 surface at Gold Coast in April last year.

A maiden winner when tackling 1690m in a maiden on a good 4 track here in October last year, she resumed with a narrow margin success over course and distance last month.

That latest victory came in a Benchmark 60 event held on a soft 5 surface and the form looks decent enough with both the second and sixth placing subsequently.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock had a subsequent Group 2 scorer behind her when fourth over 1600m at Sunshine Coast on her final start of 2022.

While unlikely that she is up to performing at that level she should prove good enough to register a victory in this competitive-looking contest.
