Australian Racing: Destiny is calling Mr Brightside

There’s plenty of Group 1 action on Saturday with both Flemington and Rosehill set to play host to top level action.

Brightside for Cup glory

The $3,000,000 Australian Cup over 2000m is the highlight on Flemington’s card with a good track expected for the feature contest.

Last year’s winner Cascadian is expected to have his supporters for the James Cummings team, having shown solid form over shorter on his two most recent starts.

The first of those saw him beaten less than three lengths in the 1600m Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes on a soft 5 surface at Randwick at the start of the month.

The veteran campaigner prepped for this race with a second in the All-Star Mile 12 months ago and he did likewise this time around.

While beaten three lengths in finishing third of 12 in that event, held at Caulfield on 16th March, he acquitted himself well with the extra distance here in his favour.

However, the one-two from Caulfield re-oppose here, with the two length-winner Pride Of Jenni and runner-up MR BRIGHTSIDE both in the line-up.

Stepping up in distance, preference is for Ben, JD & Will Hays’ gelding who has demonstrated good form around this distance in the past.

That form came in the shape of a narrow defeat to Hong Kong superstar Romantic Warrior in the 2040m Group 1 Cox Plate in October.

The selection has won twice over 1400m at the highest level since that defeat, including in the Futurity Stakes on a good 4 track at Caulfield on his penultimate start.

Craig Williams’ mount has won twice here in the past and looks up to delivering a victory jumping from next to the rail.

Impressionist to triumph in Tancred

The 2400m Tancred Stakes is the eighth race at Rosehill with the weight-for-age contest the most valuable of two Group 1 races set to take place on the card.

Buckaroo delivered a couple of competitive efforts at Group 1 level earlier in the season, including when fifth in the 2000m Champions Stakes at Flemington in November.

The five-year-old was spelled following that effort and took a step forward when third of six in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes over 2000m at this track second up this prep.

Chris Waller’s gelding was making just his fourth start since switching hemispheres on that occasion and he has to prove his stamina stepping up in distance.

Trainer William Haggas boasts an impressive 47.5% strike-rate (10/21) with his Australian runners and his POST IMPRESSIONIST is selected here.

The gelding performed in handicap company in the UK last year, including when winning over 2816m on a good 4 track at Haydock in September.

The five-year-old raced from off the pace under Tom Marquand when making his first Australian start over this course and distance a week ago.

That effort saw him come home three-and-a-half-lengths clear in the Group 3 Precise Air N E Manion Cup on a soft 5 track.

The son of Teofilo showed winning form on a wet track at York in 2022 and stepping up to Group 1 level for the first time he looks up to completing a double.

Zardozi for Stud success

In Rosehill’s seventh race Tom Marquand is set to ride the James Cummings-trained ZARDOZI in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes over 2000m.

The filly won the Group 1 Kennedy Oaks over 2500m at Flemington when racing on a good 4 track earlier this season.

The daughter of Kingman delivered a victory by over two lengths on that occasion and was spelled following that effort.

While the pick failed to shine when down the field over an inadequate 1400m at Randwick first up this prep, she showed improvement over 1500m here last time.

The filly won by two lengths when dropping down from Group 1 company for the Phar Lap Stakes that day.

The step up to 2000m is in her favour here and she is selected to get the better of likely odds-on favourite Orchestral.
